Deus Ex: Mankind Divided Review — Is It Still Worth Playing?

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided review nine years on: Prague, augmentations, that ending, PC requirements and where to buy it cheap. Honest verdict.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is a cyberpunk action RPG from Eidos-Montréal, released on 23 August 2016. Set in Prague in 2029, it follows Adam Jensen through a world where augmented people are segregated after a global catastrophe. It is one of the most flexible immersive sims ever made — and it ends far too abruptly.

What is Deus Ex: Mankind Divided about?

Two years after the events of Human Revolution, a signal caused augmented people worldwide to lose control and attack those around them. The aftermath — referred to in-game as the “Aug Incident” — leaves the augmented population segregated, policed and widely feared.

Adam Jensen now works for an Interpol task force while secretly feeding information to a hacker collective. A bombing in Prague pulls him into an investigation that runs through corporate boardrooms, black-market clinics and a conspiracy that never quite resolves.

The central theme is unsubtle — the game literally calls it “mechanical apartheid” — but Prague itself carries it well. It is a dense, vertical hub that changes noticeably as the story progresses.

What makes the gameplay special?

Mankind Divided is at its best when it presents a locked door. A single objective typically has four or five genuine solutions:

  • Hack the keypad, if your hacking skill is high enough
  • Find the code in an email on a nearby terminal
  • Pickpocket or loot it from a guard
  • Take a ventilation shaft or rooftop route around it entirely
  • Use the Icarus Dash augmentation to reach a window nobody expects

None of these are “the right answer.” The level design genuinely supports all of them, and the augmentation tree lets you commit to a playstyle — a stealth build that never fires a shot is as viable as a heavily armoured one that walks through the front door.

The best missions apply this at scale. Several can be completed without the target ever knowing you were there, and side quests occasionally resolve differently depending on evidence you chose to chase.

What are the game's weaknesses?

Three, and they are worth knowing before you buy:

The ending arrives abruptly. This is the game's most-criticised flaw. The story builds toward a confrontation that never fully lands, and several threads are left dangling for a sequel that has not been made. Nine years later, that is unlikely to change.

Stealth can be too forgiving. Enemy awareness is inconsistent. Guards lose interest quickly, and once you understand their patrol logic, sneaking stops being tense.

The hacking minigame repeats. It is enjoyable for the first few hours, then becomes a tax on exploration. You can invest in augmentations that skip much of it, and most players should.

Combat is also merely serviceable — gunplay is stiff compared with dedicated shooters. Play it as a stealth and problem-solving game and this barely registers.

Is Deus Ex: Mankind Divided worth playing in 2026?

Yes, with one caveat: play it for Prague and the mission design, not for narrative closure.

Very few games since have matched the density of its hub. Almost every apartment can be entered, most computers hold something worth reading, and side stories are frequently better written than the main plot. The Dawn Engine's lighting still looks genuinely good on modern hardware.

It is also cheap. The game is regularly discounted heavily during Steam and PlayStation sales, and the Definitive Edition — which bundles the System Rift and A Criminal Past story DLC — is usually the version to buy.

Do you need to play Human Revolution first?

It helps, but it is not required. Mankind Divided opens with a recap covering the essentials.

That said, Human Revolution (2011) is excellent, frequently cheaper still, and gives Jensen's relationships far more weight. If you have the time, play it first.

CPUIntel Core i3-2100 or AMD equivalentIntel Core i7-3770K / AMD FX-8350

Running it on a low-end PC: the built-in benchmark is unusually honest — use it. If you are short on headroom, turning down Shadow Quality and disabling MSAA recovers the most frames for the least visual loss. The game is CPU-heavy in Prague, so expect your lowest frame rates in the hub rather than in combat.

Where can you buy Deus Ex: Mankind Divided?

  • PCSteam and GOG (DRM-free)
  • PlayStation — PlayStation Store (PS4 version, backward compatible on PS5)
  • Xbox — Microsoft Store, backward compatible on Series X|S

Looking to play it cheaply?

This is a nine-year-old game and it goes on deep discount regularly — often under a few dollars during seasonal sales. It has also appeared in subscription catalogues and bundle promotions in the past, so it is worth checking Game Pass, PS Plus and Humble before paying full price. Buy the Definitive Edition if it is available; it includes both story DLCs.

A note on “free download” sites: cracked copies of Mankind Divided circulating on file hosts are illegal and a known malware vector. Given how cheap the legitimate version is during sales, the risk is not worth it. IGGG Guides does not link to pirated software.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided FAQ

How long is Deus Ex: Mankind Divided?

Roughly 15–20 hours for the main story. Completing side missions and exploring Prague thoroughly pushes it to 35–45 hours.

Is Mankind Divided open world?

No. It uses a large, highly detailed hub — Prague — connected to separate mission areas, rather than a continuous open world.

Can you finish the game without killing anyone?

Yes. A full non-lethal, undetected playthrough is possible, and the game tracks it. Non-lethal takedowns and tranquilliser weapons are available from the start.

Does Mankind Divided have multiple endings?

The finale branches based on choices made in the closing sequence, but the differences are smaller than in Human Revolution. Most variation across a playthrough shows up in individual mission outcomes instead.

Will there be a Deus Ex sequel?

Nothing has been announced. Eidos-Montréal was acquired by Embracer Group in 2022 and a reported Deus Ex project was cancelled in 2024. Treat Mankind Divided as the end of the current arc.

The verdict

Mankind Divided is a brilliant game attached to an unfinished story. Moment to moment it is one of the finest immersive sims ever built — Prague alone justifies the purchase, and the freedom in its mission design still outclasses most modern releases.

Go in knowing the ending will not satisfy you, buy it in a sale, and treat it as a playground rather than a narrative. On those terms it is very easy to recommend.

Best for: fans of Dishonored, Prey (2017) and Hitman — anyone who enjoys solving a level rather than clearing it.
Skip if: you need a story that resolves, or you want a straightforward shooter.
