Many people are out to get you, and you only have one day left. Every mistake will cost you much time. Your life depends on where you stand and how well you use what is around you. Use everything you can, like things you can throw, weapons you made yourself, windows, and ledges. You will have a bad life, and no one will help you. Sifu Game Review
We knew Sifu would be difficult, but we did not think it would be this hard on you. It is a classic story of martial arts revenge, told over several urban stages with different fights and tough bosses in each one. If you thought Sifu would be a kung fu power fantasy, you are in for a big surprise.
Sifu has a steep learning curve, like the ones you usually see in fighting games or more intense action games like Devil May Cry. However, Sifu does not let you choose how hard it is, and after a short level where you learn some key moves, you are pretty much on your own to figure things out.
There is a lot to think about from the start, and this is not the kind of action game where you can dodge, roll, or parry your way to victory. It would help if you considered spacing, combos, and environmental dangers when fighting low-health lackeys. The blows that come at you can be high or low. If you try to avoid the wrong one, you will get hit. Simply put, Sifu does not hold back, if you will excuse the pun.
Even though this review is only three paragraphs long, you probably already know if Sifu is your kind of game. We do not doubt that many players will think about bouncing before seeing most of what Sifu offers. However, if you can get past that initial barrier to entry and see every loss as a chance to learn, there is nothing quite like SloClap's latest.
Sifu is insanely good when you are in the zone. When the perfect animations and sound design come together, Sifu becomes the best impressive tributes to martial arts we have seen in a video game. In Sifu, the goal is to beat a challenge that initially seemed impossible. You realise how rewarding this game is when you can run through earlier levels without breaking a sweat.
Even so, there are some frustrating things about Sifu. As was said, your defensive skills are essential, and one of the most important is avoiding attacks from both high and low. These cool-looking moves to avoid your opponent need to be timed right, but it can be tough to respond to your opponent's moves, sometimes to the point where it feels cheap. The thing is, most attacks are quick and rarely give you enough warning to be able to avoid them by instinct alone.
Especially when fighting stronger enemies, this means that fights often turn into a game of trial and error, and in the worst case, You have an equal chance of figuring out if a boss is going high or low. The combat system relies so much on these high-low dodges that it almost feels like there should be a more apparent sign, like the red 'danger' kanji that appears over an enemy's head in Sekiro when they are about to launch a dangerous attack.
Sifu and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice have more in common than you might think. Your many opponents and you both have a health bar and a stature bar. When you block or get hit, your stature bar goes up. If it breaks, you cannot defend yourself for a few seconds, which is usually enough time for an enemy to kill you. If you break a foe's fortitude, on the other hand, you can use a very satisfying takedown attack to knock them out.
Also, dying (often more than once) is a big part of the game. Your death counter goes up every time you die in battle. Then, the number of deaths you have had is turned into how many years you have lived. Every time you die, your brave main character gets older, and when you reach your 70s, your subsequent death brings up a blood-red "game over" screen.
It is hard to explain the roguelike parts of Sifu because there are so many ways things can go wrong. For example, if you lose a game, you do not go back to the beginning of the game. You can try that stage again, but your age will be set to whatever your record for being the youngest is. You want to finish each level at the youngest age possible. So, you will have more "lives" for when you are in a tough fight. If you are anything like us, you will quickly become obsessed with getting better at a level.
As you progress, you can also get a wide range of new skills. If you save up enough experience points, you can get powerful moves, and each new move adds more depth to the battle. You can unlock these skills permanently if you buy them more than once, but to be clear, there is no easy way to get experience points.
It can be hard to gradually learn new moves and the ins and outs of new enemy types simultaneously, but the sense of accomplishment makes it all worth it. Also, Sifu feels excellent to play on PlayStation 5 with its super smooth 60 frames per second, tight controls, and well-implemented DualSense features. The haptics works well here, adding weight to each strike, block, and parry through small vibrations.
However, what makes Sifu stand out is the way it looks. It starts boringly as you fight through gang-controlled apartment buildings, but later stages have shockingly abstract graphics and bright colours. It grows into a beautiful sight, and a Sifu is as fun to watch as it is to play. Moreover, it helps that the levels are well-made. At first, they encourage you to explore, but once you get used to the layout, you can quickly get to critical fights and even boss fights.
If you could get through the whole game in one sitting, Sifu would only take a few hours. However, most people will spend much more time getting past the game's many challenges. Most stages last about 30 minutes, but if you practise enough, you can finish them in 10 minutes, which is a big part of the fun.
