Since the game came out three years ago, a lot has changed. After starting as a paid product, it decided in late 2019 to go the free-to-play route. After working with Activision to make the first game and this one, Bungie broke off with the publisher to do it on their own. And after two big pieces of DLC were added to the base game, much content was recently taken away so that the developer could better control and manage the experience. It will be in an interesting position when the PlayStation 5 version of the popular looter shooter comes out. It is because the PlayStation 5 version is a significant update meant to make the game better for people who already play it, not to bring in new players. It is how Destiny 2 has looked and worked on consoles the best it has ever been.

PC players have been able to play Bungie's Halo sequel at 60 frames per second for years. It is not the case for PS4 or PS4 Pro players. Last-generation systems always had a limit of 30, so there was a big difference between the different versions. However, all of that changes with PS5, and Sony fans finally see what they've been missing. And it's a surprise.

Destiny 2 has always been fun, with lots of ways to move around and great gunplay. The PS5 version takes these mechanics to the next level because it runs at 60 frames per second. It makes the overall experience smoother in terms of how your controller inputs are shown on-screen and how quickly you can press the R2 button when enemies are coming at you. When you hold the slightly bigger PS5 DualSense controller, it feels like heaven.

It is valid for all PvE parts of the game, where you and a group of friends can fight the forces of Darkness together. Latest update of Destiny 2: Beyond Light, there are a lot of new missions, quests, and destinations that let you do that if you want to spend some money. You can learn about the world and its history for free, but you still have to pay for the good stuff. From that point of view, it's not a very good free-to-play game.

We're not done talking about frame rates, though, because Bungie went the extra mile to add a 120 frames-per-second mode that can be turned on or off during PvP multiplayer matches. Even though it only works with the best 4K TVs on the market, it has a clear advantage over rivals with lower frame rates. You'll be able to react faster and spot enemies farther away. Each map will feel easier to move around, and your gunplay will only improve. Since the game still puts you up against other people on PS4, it can sometimes feel almost unfair. The trade-off is that the graphics take a big hit, so much so that it looks worse than what a primary PS4 can do. Getting to such a high frame rate must be hard on the hardware, but the graphics quality is evident. You must decide if that's worth the slight tactical edge, it might give you.

Destiny 2 uses the PS5 to give better lighting, draw distances and more detailed models at 4K in the standard 60 frames-per-second modes. It's a big step up from what PlayStation players are used to and, along with Demon's Souls, a great example of the next generation of games. Never before has it been so impressive to load into the Tower.

Even better, you'll get there faster than ever before. A lot has cut down the load times. All load times have been cut down by a lot, so players will spend less time waiting in orbit or traveling to a planet while assets and environments are put together. We can thank the PS5 SSD for that. There is no longer a delay between pressing the Options button and seeing your inventory and loadout. It has been a real pain for the community in the heat of battle for years. If people don't think the higher frame rate is the best thing about Destiny 2 on PS5, the quick load times are.

But that's it for Bungie's support of the next-generation console. There's no room for Activity Cards or DualSense controllers. The adaptive triggers feel the same as the ones on the PS4 DualShock, and the only rumble setting we can change is the standard one. The fact that you can't jump right into a Crucible match or the Tower from the PS5 home screen is very disappointing. That would have been a huge turning point in the game.

Destiny-2-Game-Review

It's a good update, but the best and worst thing about this version for the next generation is that it's still very much Destiny 2. It has a solid hard-core community, and most people interested in giving the looter shooter a try have probably already done so. This PS5 version doesn't change anything; it's prettier and runs better. Clans that want to keep trying to reach the highest Power level and master Raid encounters can do so, but new players will be overwhelmed by the number of systems, mechanics, and levels as soon as they start the game. Fixing that problem was never the main reason for making a PS5 version, but as we start a new generation.

Destiny 2's PS5 version is all about the game's dedicated fans. It has a smooth 60 frames per second that show off the game's great gunplay and take it to new heights for console players. Also, there's another mode with a frame rate in the hundreds. And load times are much shorter, so the action comes much faster than before. Even though new players will still be overwhelmed by almost everything it offers, Destiny 2 for the next generation is a crowd-pleaser for those who already play and have grown to love and hate the experience.
