GreedFall Game Review
This generation of spiders has had a lot to do. The French developer has made two role-playing games: Bound by Flame, which came out in 2014, and The Technomancer, which came out in 2016. Both games had some fantastic ideas and a unique feel, but in the end, their gameplay mechanics and stories were not as good as they could have been. Spiders' work has always had a spark of something bigger, but it's been snuffed out until now.

GreedFall is, without a doubt, the best game the studio has made so far. The developer finally got it right on the third try, combining its love of strange fantasy with a solid gameplay base. GreedFall is more significant than its predecessors and more consistent in tone and structure. It could be Spiders' breakthrough album.
There aren't many Western action RPGs on PlayStation 4, which is surprising. GreedFall aims to fill that void in a world after Witcher 3. It's a lot like Dragon Age Inquisition: you fight as a group, talk to people based on your choices, focus on character classes, and make your gear. It also likes extensive, separate areas with more than one big open map. But unlike Inquisition, GreedFall isn't bogged down by many fetch quests and random goals. Instead, it's a tightly packed-experience from beginning to end.
You play as De Sardet, a diplomat who has to bring order to a mostly wild island. At first glance, the island of Teer Fradee may seem like paradise. It's far away from the continent's troubles, including a nasty plague. But it doesn't take long for De Sardet and their friends to realize that tensions between warring nations and the island's natives are at an all-time high. Your job is, of course, to try to get everyone to get along.
As you might have guessed, De Sardet can be a man or a woman, and you can change some basic things about your character right at the story's start. But De Sardet never feels like a natural part of yourself. Their personalities are set from the beginning, and there aren't many ways to change them. You either do your diplomatic job well, or you mess it up.
There aren't many choices in dialogue that make sense. When you talk to De Sardet, you'll pick questions from a list, and De Sardet will decide how to respond. For an RPG that seems to be trying to compete with BioWare, it's disappointing that only a few key events give you a natural choice and result.
You can still play a role in this game, especially in building De Sardet. For example, investing in traits like charisma or intuition lets you choose different ways to talk to people, which can change how quests turn out. But these don't feel like choices when they both lead to the best result. Many searches will either end in bloodshed (terrible) or a good deal (sound). It's too often black and white, and it seems like GreedFall is underselling itself.
Here, Don't get us wrong. Most of the RPG fans will still find a lot to like here. It's satisfying to stop a fight between religious extremists and angry locals, but we wish there were a little more to it than just putting all our skill points into the charisma stat.

GreedFall's role-playing isn't the best, but it does a good job building a world. This exciting fantasy is based on the colonization of America by Europeans. It has muskets, frilly clothes, and beautiful facial hair. At its best, it's an exciting place with many personalities. GreedFall game is different in all the right ways.
The different groups that live in this world also do a great job selling it. The religious and violent Theleme, which was built on the teachings of a saint, is at odds with the scientific Bridge Alliance. On the other hand, the people who live in Teer Fradee worship nature, so you can imagine that many of them aren't too happy to see strangers come in and clean their homes. Even though the relationship between the three main groups can be predicted, it's still a delicate triangle that makes you wonder where your loyalty lies.
In the same way, the main characters in the game are pretty strong. Your friends don't have a lot of depth, but they all have their quirks, and getting to know them is one of the best parts of the game. Many of the side- quests that are available in the game are given to you by your friends, which lets you learn more about them and the groups or people they belong to.
GreedFall's story has everything it needs to be good: a good cast and a well-built world. However, the writing in large parts of the game is boring and slows it down. Even though it's not a deal-breaker, dialogue tends to fade into the background. The thing is that GreedFall is not very funny. Everyone and everything is just a little bit angry, a little bit upset, and has no real taste. Less essential characters talk about their problems for minutes at a time, and even though the acting is mostly good, it's hard to pay attention when everything is so dull. Even worse, some side quests require you to track back and forth and listen to everything every NPC says before you can move on. It can be tedious, and the fact that there is no background music or other noise when people are talking doesn't help.
But it's not all mouth-flapping because this is an action RPG. The GreedFall game has the best fighting of any Spiders game. And It is evident right away. It's surprisingly responsive and tight, focusing on basic combos, special moves, and ways to avoid getting hit. The ability to block attacks is also essential, and it comes in very handy when you have to take on a very aggressive enemy. Battles are usually quick and exciting, not just because a few hard hits can make you drink healing potions like water.

Yes, GreedFall can sometimes be challenging, but it rarely gets frustrating. There are some weird hitboxes, but that's about it. There's also an accessible mode. Our only complaint is that some bosses are too strong for your allies, even though they are usually perfect. Some attacks seem to stun your supporters so much that they can't run away or make them too dumb to run away. The more complex difficulties and enemies can be so dangerous that the game is almost sure to end if you don't have friends to help you. We don't like it, but we hope the AI will change after the game comes out.
So, fighting is primarily fun, and switching between different fighting styles on the fly makes it even better. You can use one-handed weapons, two-handed weapons, guns, traps, and magic. De Sardet's skill tree lets you mix and match these in any way you want. It's not the most profound progression system, but it's well-balanced. Crushing a heavily armored opponent with a giant axe is satisfying, and zipping around the battlefield and shooting magical blasts is fun. It's not as good as Dragon's Dogma, Monster Hunter, or Dark Souls, but it's a vast improvement over what Spiders has done in the past.
Another thing that sets the bar for the developer is... How well GreedFall did. GreedFall runs very well on PS4 Pro, which is not true of The Technomancer. It loads quickly and rarely skips a frame, making it a very smooth experience. Even though it doesn't look great (though the art direction is excellent), it works perfectly where it matters. There are only a few minor bugs in the graphics.
GreedFall is by far Spiders' best game, and it's incredible how far the company has come in just a few years. It satisfies the BioWare craving with an exciting world, likable characters, and solid gameplay. But besides the setting, nothing else about GreedFall stands out. It has good combat, but it's not great. The role-playing is primarily good, but in the end, it's not as good as it could be. The writing is good but sometimes dull. GreedFall is on the verge of becoming something great. There's a lot for RPG fans to like, but don't go in expecting the next masterpiece of the genre.
