What do you know? Outriders are not bad at all. The demo was ripped apart in our first impressions article, and the final version shows that developer People Can Fly didn't put its best foot forward in those first few hours. It's still the same kind of game, but the Polish studio was smart enough to save a few tricks for the whole experience. Even though it has some problems, like uninteresting characters and the need for a constant Internet connection, Outriders is an impressively appealing alternative to the looter shooters that some people have come to love.
At first glance, though, you could be forgiven for thinking it's a cheap copy of Division 2 that takes place in another world. Both are looter shooters played from the third-person perspective with cover. But you don't need that cover. It is for the bad guys and fundamentally changes the way Outriders is played. Now, hiding behind a piece of rubble is more likely to kill you than anything else. The game is best when you do the opposite and take the fight to the enemy with flashy skills and fun gunplay. Staying still is pretty much a wish to die. It's an excellent example of a power fantasy.
People Can Fly's follow-up to Bulletstorm (and the Save the World campaign for Fortnite, but let's not talk about that) is about how it makes you feel. The four classes think differently because they have other skills and roles in battle. The Trickster's abilities are all about getting up close and personal with the people of Enoch. The Pyromancer, on the other hand, uses fire to its advantage and works from a little farther back on the battlefield. The Devastator becomes the tank, while the Technomancer is more of a long-range support class.
Outriders stand out from other loot-and-shoot games in this way because it feels like Destiny 2 if you didn't have to wait minutes for your super to charge. Oh, and you have three of them equipped at the same time. All of your skills can be used to kill enemies as often as you want because they only take a few seconds to recharge. Simply put, it feels great. The Trickster class puts that into perspective with a dash that sends you behind an enemy, a bubble that can be used to stop bullets for a limited time, and an excellent move called Cyclone Slice that kills weaker enemies. All of them can be used in a few seconds, and you can use them all over again in less than a minute. We'll repeat the compliment: Outriders is fun to play.
The same is true for gunplay, which is the other half of the equation once your skills are in motion. Machine guns, shotguns, and rifles are all over the loot pool, but they all pack a punch, whether they are expected or the best of the best. Combat stays interesting when there are many different types of enemies, and new ones are added quickly. Humans will always try to flank you and overwhelm you with their numbers, while other species will head straight for you to do as much damage as quickly as possible. You never see too many of one type of enemy before another comes along and changes things up. It keeps you on your toes.
Your health meter ties the two systems together, which may surprise you. During the 20 to 25-hour campaign, your HP will never come back on its own. It makes it very important that each class has a way to get it back. You get your health back by killing enemies. The Trickster class does this by beating enemies up close, while the Pyromancer class kills enemies with fire on them. It is why you won't get very far if you hide behind something. To stay alive, you must be aggressive and fight the enemy at all times to get your health back. It's a bit of a give-and-take: if you leave cover, you'll probably lose health, but the reward at the end of your risky journey is worth it. An interesting mechanic that works well and helps make Outriders feel even more different.
The story and characters of the game, on the other hand, make the game less fun. The game story setup is pretty interesting: in the far future, Earth is deemed uninhabitable, so people move to another planet called Enoch. Even though it was called a haven for life, it was anything. After the player-made protagonist wakes up from cryosleep 31 years later, it's your job to figure out how the human race can stay alive in this strange world.
What happens next is fine, but the characters who drive the plot are terrible. The main character has only one trait, and the rest of the cast ranges from boring to disgusting. Some bad voice acting probably doesn't help, but that can't even begin to make up for some characters' crazy mood swings that don't make much sense. Halfway through the story, most other characters are almost forgotten, and the leaders of the opposing forces aren't developed. It's excellent that Outriders is constantly adding new and different places to explore, but you shouldn't play it for its story.
However, we would try it out rather than not play the game at all. People Can Fly's latest project must always be connected to the Internet, which has caused many server outages in the few days since it was released. We think it will improve as time passes, but we can't ignore how much frustration the requirement has caused us while playing the game. We sometimes couldn't play for hours, even when the US was sleeping. Since we lose progress and loot in the process, we can't be sure we'll be able to finish a mission, even when there aren't many people around. You can't even play offline in a closed lobby, making it hard to understand why this is a requirement. Again, we believe things will get better, but there will always be that little worry in our minds. Too often, the problem showed its ugly face for us to ignore.
But here's something you don't have to pay attention to People Can Fly says Outriders doesn't have microtransactions and won't be a "Games as a Service" game. It's meant to be a one-time thing, but those who want more can keep going. You can play all of the game's content on your own. You never have to find a partner to start a mission or something harder. You can always play the whole game with up to two other people. It's nice to play a game like this and know that we won't have to spend the next five years doing it.
These endgame quests are called Expeditions, and once you've spent a few hours getting used to them, you'll find them fun. It's a Time Attack mode, and you'll get better rewards if you beat specific parameters when you finish the 14 missions. And that's where legendary weapons and armor come in. Even though the endgame content isn't as good as Destiny 2, hard-core players will want to return for more. At the very least, it's much more complete than anything ANTHEM had to offer after the campaign.
Outriders' graphics aren't much to talk about, either. There are some nice skyboxes here and there, but this isn't the next big thing for the PlayStation 5. The game doesn't use the DualSense controller in any way, and bugs and glitches worsen things. Trying to complete an objective doesn't always work right, so you have to leave the game and try again. Then, quest markers sometimes don't change or aren't reliable, and when trying to team up with friends, the PS5 sometimes crashes back to the home screen.
Outriders are at their best when it lets combat, have good gunplay, and have very satisfying abilities to do all the talking. When it moves, its unique mix of aggression is something to see. It's not great because it has terrible characters, you have to stay online and pair with servers, and there are some technical problems, but they don't mess up the picture enough to keep it from being recommended. Outriders is a very cool movie.
