Oddworld: Soulstorm Enhanced Edition Review 2026 — Abe's Revolution Halfway Through

Oddworld Soulstorm review showing Abe leading Mudokon followers through an industrial level

Abe throws himself, his followers and a revolution straight into the fire — classic Oddworld darkness with modern 2.9D presentation.

Oddworld: Soulstorm is a cinematic 2.9D puzzle-platformer from series creator Lorne Lanning and Oddworld Inhabitants, first released in April 2021 and finalized as the Enhanced Edition later that year. As a reimagining of Abe's Exoddus, it drops Abe from farm-floor savior to fugitive revolutionary, scavenging supplies, crafting weaponized contraband and shepherding hundreds of fragile Mudokons out of SoulStorm Brewery. It is gorgeous, pain-stakingly designed and frequently brilliant — and its strict old-school demands will still split players in 2026, exactly as critics did at launch.

Quick verdict:

Play it if you grew up with Abe, love methodical puzzle-platformers, or appreciate a story with real bite. Skip it if unpredictable follower AI, finicky stealth and trial-and-error difficulty sound exhausting rather than rewarding.

What Soulstorm actually is

Soulstorm picks up immediately after Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty! (2014), which itself remade 1997's Abe's Oddysee. This is not a straight remake of 1998's Abe's Exoddus — Lanning calls it a reimagining, rebuilt from scratch as the second chapter of Abe's planned five-game journey (the "quintology").

Having freed his fellow Mudokons from RuptureFarms, Abe now carries the weight of a promised revolution. The hulking SoulStorm Brewery pumps out a brew that keeps the workforce enslaved, Molluck the Glukkon has escaped, and the mysterious "Spirit of 1029" walks beside Abe through a journey Lanning designed as darker, scarier and pointedly relevant. The writing still wobbles between satire, horror and slapstick — that whiplash is Oddworld — but the story goes places the originals never dared, and the improved cinematics make it land.

The Enhanced Edition difference

The 2021 launch was rough, and Oddworld Inhabitants spent seven months fixing it. The Enhanced Edition — now the default version everywhere — delivers:

  • All launch patches plus deeper work on responsiveness, motion code and audio balance.
  • Smarter Slig and follower AI — both more intelligent and more consistent.
  • Bonus content: Toby's Escape (a short standalone prequel detailing how one Mudokon fled RuptureFarms alone) on PlayStation and PC, and Vykkers Labs (a set of puzzle rooms themed around Brew testing) on Xbox.
  • The version critics scored better: the Xbox/Enhanced Edition sits at 79–83 on Metacritic versus 67 for the launch-day PS5 release.

If you tried Soulstorm in April 2021 and bounced off its bugs, the game you can buy in 2026 is a noticeably different product.

Classic Oddworld gameplay, evolved

The spine is untouched: Abe walks, runs, rolls, climbs, chants and possesses in a 2.9D side-scroller where levels wind deep into gorgeously rendered industrial backgrounds. Followers come along with a tap — "Wait" and "Follow me" are back — and a new double-tap system lets you flip your whole group between aggressive and passive behavior, which fundamentally changes how you route crowds past patrols.

Checkpoints and quick-load speed things up considerably versus the classics, but the essential bargain is the same: every rescued Mudokon is one more fragile life you are responsible for, and casualties are permanent until the end of the level. Saving everyone is the game's quiet greatest challenge.

Oddworld Soulstorm Enhanced Edition gameplay showing stealth section with a Slig guard

Sligs, alarm zones and moving platforms: Soulstorm never stops layering hazards on top of its followers.

Scavenging and crafting: the modern layer

The biggest mechanical addition is a scavenging-and-crafting economy. Abe picks locks, loots bins and vending machines, and combines junk into tools: rubber bands into bouncy projectiles, Brew bottles and flares into stun or fire weapons, smoke screens, epoxied gates, even possessed Sligs turned on their own squads.

It hands you real agency — a guarded corridor can be pickpocketed, blinded, blown open or sneakily circumvented — and it fits the story's scavenger-revolution themes beautifully. The trade-off: it is also optional enough that purists can largely ignore it, and the inventory juggling occasionally slows levels that used to be about pure rhythm.

Difficulty, quarma and replay value

This is a hard game. Expect deaths, restarts and entire sections that only click on the fourth attempt. The design is fair — checkpoints are generous — but the margin for error with followers in tow is razor thin, and the game grades you on it:

  • Quarma scores your karma per level based on Mudokons saved versus killed, locking the true ending behind consistent rescues.
  • Leaderboards let you replay any stage for completion badges (all rescued, all looted, no deaths, par times).
  • The result is a 19-hour campaign that realistically doubles for perfectionists.

What holds it back

  • Throwing mechanics feel mushy, especially tossing water onto lines of flame — the arc rarely reads the way you intend.
  • Stealth is inconsistent: a single careless drop off a ledge can instantly alert everything nearby, and Slig detection can feel arbitrary even after the AI pass.
  • Follower chaos: a dozen Mudokons under fire will never behave perfectly, and re-gathering survivors after a wipe can feel like unpaid work.
  • The Switch "Oddtimized" port makes visible compromises; PS5/Series X or PC is the way to play.
  • Even post-Enhancement, it's a 67–79 Metacritic game — most critics respected the ambition more than they enjoyed the friction. The cult fanbase loves it; know which side you're on.

Pros and cons

Pros Cons
Stunning 2.9D art direction and cinematics Sloppy-feeling throwing controls
Crafting adds real tactical freedom Inconsistent, often harsh stealth detection
Ambitious, darker story with genuine stakes Follower AI can sabotage perfect runs
Huge replay value via quarma and leaderboards Development clearly rushed at April 2021 launch
Frequent deep sales ($10–16) plus PS Plus Extra Switch version is noticeably downgraded

PC system requirements

Official specs from the Steam and Epic listings (note: the minimum GPU is listed as a GTX 670 on Epic and a GTX 970 on Steam's current page):

Buying advice for 2026

  • Price: $39.99 digitally (Steam, Epic, PS Store, Xbox, GOG — DRM-free). Physical "Day One" and "Collector's" Odditions by Microids launched at $49.99.
  • Sales are frequent and deep: the game regularly drops 60–75%, hitting $9.99–$15.99. There is no reason to pay full price, and no excuse to visit a pirate site for a game that costs less than lunch.
  • PlayStation Plus Extra: Soulstorm has been in the Extra game catalog — it was also famously a day-one PS Plus freebie at launch (April 2021). Check the current catalog on your console.
  • Best version: PS5 (fast loading, 4K presentation, DualSense heartbeat haptics) or Xbox Series X|S / PC. Switch only if portability trumps fidelity.

Safe official links

Only buy from official stores. The old version of this post linked pirated Google Drive copies — five years on, Soulstorm is cheap, often on subscription services, and the Enhanced Edition is the definitive build.

Oddworld: Soulstorm FAQ

Is Soulstorm a remake of Abe's Exoddus?

Not exactly — it's a reimagining. It retells and massively expands the story that began with Abe's Oddysee/New 'n' Tasty!, with new levels, characters and endings. It's chapter two of Lorne Lanning's planned five-part pentalogy.

What does the Enhanced Edition add?

Seven months of fixes and polish, smarter AI, better motion code and audio, and bonus content: Toby's Escape (PS/PC) or Vykkers Labs (Xbox). It's a free upgrade and now the standard version.

How long is Oddworld: Soulstorm?

About 19 hours for the main story, 27 hours with side goals, and 30+ hours if you chase full quarma and leaderboard badges.

Is Soulstorm on PS Plus or Xbox Game Pass?

It has been a day-one PS Plus free game (April 2021) and part of the PS Plus Extra catalog. It is not currently on Game Pass — it launched on Xbox as purchased software.

Is the Steam version good?

Yes — the Steam release (June 2022) is the Enhanced Edition. Steam users rate it "Mixed" (about 65% positive), mostly over difficulty and AI quibbles rather than technical problems.

Can kids play it?

It's rated ESRB Teen. There's dark industrial imagery, death, slavery themes and brew-related subject matter — fine for teens, grim for younger children.

Is Oddworld: Soulstorm worth it in 2026?

For Oddworld fans and puzzle-platformer devotees, absolutely — especially under $16 on sale or via PS Plus Extra. Casual players should expect real difficulty and occasional frustration.

Final verdict

Oddworld: Soulstorm is the franchise at its most ambitious: gorgeous, angry, inventive — and stubbornly old-school about it. The Enhanced Edition fixed the launch disaster, leaving a flawed but genuinely singular cinematic platformer that nobody else is making. Saving all 1,400 Mudokons remains one of modern gaming's great quiet challenges.

Best for: series fans, patient puzzle-platformer players, story-first gamers, completionists.

Skip if: you need forgiving stealth, precise thrown-item controls, or a chill experience.
