Quick answer: The biggest Call of Duty launch ever made, with 50 million players and the best critic scores the series had seen in years at 83 on OpenCritic and 91% recommending. Players disagreed hard: 6.2 on Metacritic and roughly 43% positive on Steam. Content support ended in December 2025, and on 7 July 2026 it left the Call of Duty launcher and became a standalone download, which is the one thing you need to know before reinstalling it.

Black Ops 6 arrived on 25 October 2024 carrying more weight than any Call of Duty in a decade. It was the first release of the Microsoft era, the first to hit Game Pass on day one, and it followed a Modern Warfare III that almost nobody defended. Treyarch and Raven had four years on it rather than the usual three.
It worked, commercially and critically. Then the players showed up, and the numbers went the other way. Two years on, with support finished and two newer Call of Duty games on the shelf, the interesting question is not whether it was good. It is whether it is still worth installing, and what happened to it in July 2026.
Critics and players could not have disagreed more

| Measure | Score | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| OpenCritic | 83, "Strong" | 91% recommend, 155+ critics, 91st percentile |
| Metacritic, PC and Xbox Series | 83 | PS5 sits at 82 across 67 reviews |
| Metacritic users | 6.2 | "Mixed", 2,299 ratings, 28% of them negative |
| Steam | roughly 43 to 46% positive | "Mixed". Recent reviews run warmer, near 70% |
| Players | 50 million | By July 2025. 33.7 million in the launch month alone |
Why we give the Steam figure as a range. Black Ops 6 has had more than one review pool. It originally sat under the shared Call of Duty app, then got its own Steam page in July 2026. Filtering by English only moves the number again. Trackers put the all-time figure near 45.75%, the standalone page's English filter reads 42%, and other reporting says 43%. Any single number you see quoted is one slice of that. The direction is not in doubt in any version.
The complaints behind that gap are consistent and specific. Skill-based matchmaking. The bloated shared launcher. Cheating. Map design that funnels everyone into close-range fights. Technical problems at launch, which dropped the game to "Mixed" within 24 hours of release. Critics reviewed the campaign and the feel of the guns. Players reviewed six months of matchmaking.
We have covered this split before in our Terminator: Resistance review, where the gap ran the other way. If you want the wider argument about why big-budget releases keep landing like this, our piece on battle royale burnout covers the same ground from the player side.
The thing nobody's review mentions: it left the launcher

From launch until mid 2026, Black Ops 6 did not boot on its own. It lived inside Call of Duty HQ, the shared app introduced in November 2023 that also housed Warzone and later Black Ops 7. On some platforms that single install grew past 300GB. It was the most complained-about thing in the entire franchise.
On 7 July 2026 at 9am Pacific, Activision pulled Black Ops 6 out of it. The game became a standalone download on every platform, and the old files sitting inside the shared install were deleted automatically. If you tried to launch it from the old tile after that date, it failed. Plenty of people assumed their copy had been revoked.
If Black Ops 6 will not start, this is almost always why. Open your platform's library, find "Call of Duty: Black Ops 6" as its own separate entry, and install that. Do not use the old Call of Duty HQ tile. Nothing is lost. Rank, prestige, camos, operators, Battle Pass items and Zombies rewards are all tied to your Activision account through cross-progression, not to the local files. Disc owners insert the disc to validate the licence, then download the standalone version digitally.
There was a bonus for PlayStation owners. Trophies had been tied to the shared app, so Black Ops 6 never had its own Platinum. The standalone split gave it one. Xbox players got a clean achievement list for the same reason. Modern Warfare II and III were separated the same way back in July 2025, and Black Ops 7 is expected to follow around mid 2027.
What is actually in it
The headline mechanic is Omnimovement, which lets you sprint, slide and dive in any direction independently of where you are looking. It is the first movement change in years that did not feel bolted on, and it is the reason the game still feels quicker than most shooters.
| Mode | What you get | Honest problem |
|---|---|---|
| Campaign | 11 missions, 8 to 10 hours, early 1990s Gulf War era. You play William "Case" Calderon against a rogue outfit called Pantheon, with Frank Woods and Russell Adler returning. Between missions you return to The Rook, a safehouse in Bulgaria, to spend mission cash on upgrades | Those upgrades break the difficulty curve. Even on Veteran you end up close to unkillable, and the open-level missions sag badly between objectives |
| Multiplayer | 16 maps at launch plus six seasons of additions. Classic Prestige returns, Gunsmith is simplified, and Kill Order adds a high-value-target mode where one player per team is marked | The launch weapon pool leans hard on assault rifles and SMGs. The Specialist perk system rewards stacking one colour, and with only two or three perks per colour it narrows builds instead of opening them |
| Zombies | Round-based returns after Modern Warfare III's open-map experiment. Liberty Falls, a West Virginia town, is the approachable one. Terminus, an island facility in the Philippine Sea, is the hard one. Gobblegums, augments, rarities and field upgrades on top | Only two maps at launch, and boss zombies get spammed heavily in later rounds |
Jack Wall returned to score it, which matters more than it sounds. The Black Ops sound identity is half of why the brand holds together.
Where it sits now that two newer games exist
| When | What happened |
|---|---|
| 25 Oct 2024 | Launch. $69.99 standard, up to $99.99. Biggest Call of Duty release ever, record Game Pass sign-ups in a day, PlayStation and Steam unit sales up 60% on the year before. Over 306,000 Steam concurrents in the first weekend |
| Nov 2024 to Dec 2025 | Six seasons of content. Warzone brought Verdansk back in Season 3, April 2025 |
| July 2025 | 50 million players |
| 14 Nov 2025 | Black Ops 7 arrives and becomes the worst user-rated Call of Duty ever. Season 6 closes out Black Ops 6 in December |
| 7 Jul 2026 | Leaves the Call of Duty launcher. Standalone download, own trophy and achievement list |
| Oct 2026 | Modern Warfare 4 becomes the current release, and early Steam reception is reported at around 81%, the strongest the series has managed in roughly a decade |
That last line reframes everything. Black Ops 6 is no longer competing with Modern Warfare III. It is competing with a better-received newer game and a cheaper older one. Our take on where the franchise went after this is in Call of Duty Is Giving Up, and if you are weighing the alternative, Battlefield 6: Can It Dent Call of Duty? covers the other side of that fight.
Do not assume it is still on Game Pass. It launched there on day one, which was a first for the series, but catalogue membership is not permanent and games rotate out. Check the current Game Pass listing before you subscribe for this specific title. We learned that lesson with SIGNALIS, which plenty of live articles still describe as free on the service long after it left.
Buy, wait or skip
| You are | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Here for the campaign | Buy on sale | Genuinely the best Call of Duty campaign in years, and it is 8 to 10 hours you can finish without touching a server |
| Here for round-based Zombies | Buy on sale | Six seasons of maps now, not two, and it still has a population |
| Here for multiplayer only | Wait | Queues are thinner since Black Ops 7 and Modern Warfare 4 pulled people away. Check it is populated in your region at your usual hours |
| Already own it and it will not start | Redownload | The July 2026 standalone split, not a broken account. Your progress is safe |
| Short on storage | Better than it was | The whole point of the split was to stop you carrying the entire shared install. Campaign, multiplayer and Zombies packs can be managed separately |
| Allergic to skill-based matchmaking | Skip | It is the single most common complaint in the negative reviews and there is no setting that turns it off |
Verdict
The best Call of Duty of its generation, and the player scores still do not lie. Omnimovement is the most successful mechanical change the series has made in a decade, the campaign is the strongest since 2019, and round-based Zombies coming home was worth the wait. None of that stopped a 6.2 user score, because matchmaking, cheating and the launcher ground people down over months in ways a launch review cannot measure. Buy it on sale for the campaign and Zombies. Go in with lower expectations for multiplayer than the critic average suggests. Assessed after the end of seasonal support and the July 2026 standalone split.
Frequently asked questions
Why will Black Ops 6 not launch any more?
Because on 7 July 2026 it was moved out of the Call of Duty HQ launcher and became a standalone download, and the old shared files were deleted. Install "Call of Duty: Black Ops 6" as its own entry in your platform library. Your progress is untouched.
Will I lose my camos, rank or operators?
No. Everything is tied to your Activision account through cross-progression, not to the install. Levels, prestige, camos, calling cards, Battle Pass items and Zombies rewards all come back.
Is it still getting updates?
No. Seasonal content ended with Season 6 in December 2025, which ran alongside the Black Ops 7 launch. The servers are up and the game works, but there is no new content coming.
Is it better than Black Ops 7?
By player reception, comfortably. Black Ops 7 became the lowest user-rated Call of Duty ever recorded, sitting around 1.6 on Metacritic and under 39% on Steam. Black Ops 6's 6.2 and roughly 43% look generous next to that.
How long is the campaign?
Eleven missions, roughly 8 to 10 hours depending on difficulty and how much of The Rook safehouse you poke around in.
Does it run on PS4 and Xbox One?
Yes, it shipped cross-generation on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S, and PC. Performance figures you see quoted are usually from a specific reviewer's current-generation setup, so treat them as that rather than a guarantee.
How many Zombies maps are there?
Two at launch, Liberty Falls and Terminus, with more added across six seasons. The "only two maps" criticism in most reviews is a launch-day observation that stopped being true in 2025.
