Treyarch has returned with a bang, delivering one of the strongest entries the series has seen in years — a Call of Duty that feels like it was built to win back the fans across all fronts: Campaign, Multiplayer, and Zombies.
Following the disappointment of Modern Warfare III the previous year, this installment had a heavy burden to bear. It needed to remind players why Call of Duty has dominated for nearly two decades — a blockbuster that guarantees cinematic thrills and razor-sharp multiplayer action. Thankfully, Black Ops 6 rises to the occasion and proves that the franchise still has plenty of fire left.
Before diving into the big three pillars of the game, let's talk about some key features that shape the entire experience.
First up, the headline feature: Omnimovement. You've probably seen the clips — players diving mid-air, spinning backwards, and pulling off stunts that look straight out of Max Payne or The Matrix. It sounds wild, and it absolutely is, but it works. Omnimovement strikes a balance between the boots-on-the-ground style of Modern Warfare and the fast, experimental flair of Advanced Warfare. In action, it's fluid, intuitive, and a perfect fit for the chaotic pace of Black Ops 6.
Next, something longtime fans will be happy about: the UI has finally been fixed. For years, Call of Duty's menus were a chore to use. Treyarch has refined it, providing a modern and straightforward interface that's easy to use and uncluttered. It's a small change, but one that makes a huge difference.
And then there's performance. Despite still being cross-gen, Black Ops 6 runs beautifully on modern hardware — 120fps at 1440p or a rock-solid 60fps at 4K. Pair that smoothness with Omnimovement, and you get one of the slickest-feeling shooters in years.
With that foundation in place, let's break down the game across its three pillars: Campaign, Multiplayer, and Zombies.
Campaign
One of Call of Duty's defining strengths has always been its blockbuster campaigns — thrilling, cinematic, and dripping with high production values. After the letdown of Modern Warfare III, Black Ops 6 feels like a return to form. The story is fast, full of action, and always interesting. It never goes on for too long. It features all the huge action scenes you would expect, but also incorporates modern elements such as open levels and customizable gameplay options. However, these new systems come with some downsides.
Early in the campaign, Woods introduces you to a new mechanic: collecting cash during missions. Between missions, this currency can be spent at a hub to upgrade the protagonist, Case. Perks include increased health, enhanced explosive resistance, reduced flinch, improved accuracy, extra ammunition, or easier armor replenishment. On paper, this is a smart way to reward exploration — but in practice, it quickly tips the balance. Even on Veteran difficulty, these upgrades can make you feel nearly unstoppable, draining some of the tension and challenge that Call of Duty campaigns are known for.
The pacing also swings between highs and lows. On the one hand, there are classic Black Ops-style espionage missions — such as sneaking into a senator's office to scan his retina with a rigged camera or cracking a casino vault — that add variety but often feel overly scripted and linear. On the other hand, Treyarch experiments with open-level missions, giving you the freedom to choose your path. These are ambitious, but the pacing can falter; trudging across a vast desert in search of a supply drop only to find worthless loot isn't exactly edge-of-your-seat gameplay.
Where the campaign truly shines is in enemy variety. Pantheon mini-bosses push you to adapt on the fly, whether you're dealing with heavily armored minigun brutes, gas-wielding disruptors, snipers, or shotgun enforcers.
Multiplayer
Multiplayer is likely where Black Ops 6 will spark the most debate. The new Omnimovement system injects a blistering fluidity into the gameplay, allowing for faster traversal and more aggressive combat. Some players will love the speed and dynamism it brings, while others may find the low time-to-kill frustrating, as reacting to ambushes becomes far more difficult than in previous titles.
From my perspective, Treyarch has struck a surprisingly good balance. The map pool leans toward quality — there are more well-designed and memorable arenas than frustrating ones. The variety of modes is also substantial, with the standout being Kill Order, a high-value target–style game type that feels like a perfect fit for objective-based multiplayer.
Nostalgia also plays a significant role. A traditional Prestige system makes its return (complete with tongue-in-cheek reminders when you hesitate to reset your rank). At the same Time, Gunsmith has been streamlined, reducing complexity without stripping away meaningful choices. Add in a fairer progression system for earning camos and skins, and you have a multiplayer suite that feels rewarding rather than punishing.
All told, Black Ops 6's Multiplayer has the ingredients to be one of the franchise's strongest in years, balancing innovation with fan-favorite systems in a way that should please both longtime veterans and newcomers.
Some areas need work. The weapon pool feels limited and leans heavily on the usual suspects — Assault Rifles and SMGs dominate, while other categories are underrepresented. The perks also come across as uninspired and too similar, with the Specialist system unintentionally amplifying the issue. Because it rewards stacking perks of the same colour, and there are usually only two or three choices per colour, it ends up constraining build variety rather than encouraging experimentation.
The weapon progression system could also use tuning. Currently, it's possible to complete a gun's camo challenges before unlocking all of its attachments, which feels counterintuitive and raises questions about why the system is designed this way in the first place.
Still, these issues don't overshadow what Treyarch has achieved. With Omnimovement breathing new life into the gameplay loop, a simplified yet rewarding buildcrafting system, and a solid lineup of maps, Multiplayer in Black Ops 6 sets a strong foundation. As new weapons and maps arrive in seasonal updates, it feels well-positioned to keep players hooked for the long haul.
Zombies
Modern Warfare III experimented with a Warzone-style open map for Zombies, but it stripped away the tension and rhythm that fans loved from the classic round-based formula. Black Ops 6 brings that back — and it does not disappoint.
It could very well be the best Zombies experience since Black Ops 3 nearly a decade ago. It feels like a perfect mix of old and new. It features the classic round-based chaos, complete with traps and waves of zombies that become increasingly difficult. However, it also introduces modern features such as Gobblegums, various weapon rarities, mods, deeper secrets, and customizable loadouts with augmentations and field upgrades. Omnimovement adds another wrinkle, making it easier to dodge and navigate hordes while still preserving the chaos and challenge as rounds intensify.
On paper, this mix of features could have felt bloated, but in practice, it flows seamlessly, offering a thrilling loop whether you're tackling it solo or with friends. Map design plays a significant role in that. Liberty Falls is approachable and player-friendly, while Terminus ups the difficulty for veterans looking for a brutal test. Together, they strike a strong balance of accessibility and depth, giving the mode serious momentum right from the start.
If there's one drawback, it's the launch content. With only two maps available at release, the offering feels a little thin — though this has been standard for the series, and more maps will almost certainly arrive in future seasons. For now, what's here is familiar enough to welcome back lapsed fans, yet fresh enough to keep them hooked with new mechanics, secrets, and challenges. Simply put, Treyarch has delivered a Zombies mode that stands as a peak for the series in recent years.

Treyarch has righted the ship with Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. It is precisely the kind of Call of Duty that Microsoft and Activision needed for a day-one Game Pass launch: a campaign that's bold and cinematic, a multiplayer suite that's fast and streamlined, and a Zombies mode that strikes a nostalgic yet modern balance.
