Police Simulator: Patrol Officers Game Review
Check out these awesome new games God of War Ragnarok, Knockout City.
Since a long time ago (yes, decades, if I think about it),... Grand Theft Auto has always been the game that stands out as a criminal-themed open world. I'll be honest: the last time I played it, it felt a little... worn out. It wasn't so much the game as it was my desire to be so cruel, so it's nice to have the opposite in Police Simulator: Patrol Officers.
You are in charge of the Brighton precinct. You will start with parking tickets and move up to more serious crimes as you get to know the community and help people when you can. It might seem silly that you start by doing simple things like writing parking tickets, but this is actually a good way to get used to the game. With only one or two crimes to watch out for, you can pretty well focus on infractions... But as you move up the ranks, you'll be able to do things like patrol shifts in cars, narcotics arrests, and so on. You can play in either a simulation mode or a casual mode... casual will let you know when crimes are being done... I'll come back to this, but it seems like all crimes are being done.
The game looks nice, but it was a little weird to walk out of the starting area and be greeted by an officer at the desk who looked exactly like me. There are different kinds of characters in the game, but you will start to see the same people over and over again because the range isn't that big. It's not a big deal, but it might have been a good idea to make the person at the desk look different from the other characters.
The sound is also pretty good, though the volume levels can sometimes be "interesting." You can, of course, change the volume levels, but I think the problems come up more when certain things happen. Before I even left the station, I heard what sounded like a very loud car. I later found out that it was a car, and I could have given the driver a ticket for being so loud. It definitely gets your attention, but I don't think it should have been so loud inside the station. Dialog can also be a little bit interesting because the voices of people helping people at a car accident, like an ambulance or other police officers, will compete with your conversations with witnesses. It's not a big deal and can sometimes be funny... But it is a quirk that might be changed in the future.
When we talk about strange things, collision detection is kind of interesting. I had just finished dealing with a car accident. I had called a wrecker and a police patrol to pick up the person I had arrested. When I went to get in my car, I saw that one of the other cars had driven into it, but it didn't matter. I got in on the wrong side, but that wasn't a problem. I pressed the tab to switch seats, and all of a sudden, the car shot up into the air and started spinning. When it landed, smoking and dented, it told me I'd been in an accident. Again, it's not a big deal and might even be funny... Supposedly, that means you have to write a report and admit that you "caused" an accident.
The fact that the casual mode lets you know about crimes... Yes, it will do that no matter if it's something you could have seen or not. If you're walking and someone right behind you drops trash, the game might say, "That person dropped trash." It also puts a big sign above them to tell you who it is... But I didn't think it was fair to accuse or fine someone for something I hadn't seen for myself. This doesn't happen if you switch to simulation mode... You will get a ticket if you don't follow the law exactly, like if you run across the street to stop a criminal, which is called "J Walking." You can, however, pick and choose which "freedoms" you have by choosing which parts of the game you want to be more simulation-like or more casual-like in the menu. I err on the side of casual because I want to be able to go after people who are breaking the law without getting in trouble for doing so (clearly, I wouldn't make a good police officer in real life ;)).
Overall, I really like Police Simulator: Patrol Officers, even with its flaws. It does play like the legal side of Grand Theft Auto, which is a nice change of pace. Grab it so you can say, "I'm the law!"
