Yakuza Kiwami 2 is a complete remake of Yakuza 2, which came out for the PlayStation 2 in 2006. Like last year's Yakuza Kiwami, Kiwami 2 follows the original game's design. It has the same plot, the same missions, the same dialogue, and the same scenes as Yakuza 2. The main difference, of course, is that it's been redone from scratch using the beautiful Dragon Engine, which was first shown off in Yakuza 6: The Song of Life earlier this year.

Besides the graphics, which can sometimes look like photos, Kiwami 2 also uses the updated combat system from Yakuza 6 and adds a few new moves and techniques. If you're trying to play through the series in order and have just finished Yakuza Kiwami, you'll be blown away by how much better this engine is.

SEGA has given us a bit of an irregular release schedule, and that's true. Jumping from Kiwami to Yakuza 6, the last part of Kazuma Kiryu's story, and then back to Kiwami 2 is complex. Kiwami 2 looks like it was made for the PS2, which makes the process even harder.

Just like Kiwami, some parts of Kiwami 2 make it clear that it is based on a game that came out more than a decade ago. During the campaign, several missions don't fit together at all, and a lot of filler would be cut out of a more modern Yakuza game.

Luckily, the story is interesting enough to carry the whole thing. At the time, the story of Yakuza 2 seemed to be a big step up from what had come before. There were many more twists and turns, the kind we've come to expect from the series, and it really put together the story elements that the sequels would use repeatedly.

In a typical way for a series, most of the story is told in slow-moving, emotionally charged cutscenes that borrow a lot from Japanese drama. They are impressive to watch and look at. But Yakuza 2's story is one of the most exciting and memorable in the series. There's Ryuji Goda, the "Dragon of Kansai," who is the polar opposite of Kiryu's "Dragon of Dojima." There are also some of the best mom jokes (In Yakuza Kiwami 2) from the series and some interesting plot (In Yakuza Kiwami 2) twists that involve a worldwide blood feud. It's great that this game from the PlayStation 2 era has been brought up to modern standards. The short cinematics and high-fidelity models reveal the familiar actors' subtle facial expressions and body language.

But it's no surprise that the quality of the character models in secondary cutscenes and the game's many substory side quests is noticeably lower. But Yakuza Kiwami 2's secondary models are much better than in Yakuza 6. They aren't as bad as in Yakuza 6, but Kiwami 2 doesn't have full-voice acting in all its scenarios like Yakuza 6. There are a few lovely exceptions to these rules, though. For example, some of the game's most famous side stories (like "diapers" or "fat Kiryu") are told in a full-length movie.

Kamurocho still has a great atmosphere, with lots of people walking around and neon lights that give it a strong sense of being honest. The Dragon Engine makes it easy to move between the street, stores, and fights. It's also nice to see a more complete, "classic" version of the area after seeing a cut-down version in Yakuza 6. In the original game of Yakuza 2. Some minor changes to Sotenbori and a third, smaller area called Shinseicho were deleted. But these omissions are disappointing for fans, but they don't take away enough from the overall experience, especially for new players, to be a significant flaw. The five-category experience system for character development is back, and so is the emphasis on eating and drinking for experience points. It's a good chance for the series that helps you feel connected to and familiar with the urban areas you explore.

The story of Kiwami 2 is about a great group of supporting characters, and as always, Kazuma Kiryu deserves respect. But maybe even more than in other Yakuza games, Kiryu has to depend on his friends, especially a brave and strong-willed police officer named Kaoru Sayama. Kiryu isn't usually interested in relationships, but the one he's building with Sayama is a story highlight.

So, it's another Yakuza game with another exciting story. Who could have seen that coming? But one of the bad guys might be the one who steals the show. Ryuji Goda, a no-frills clan boss who talks tough and punches more than he plans, is still one of the most memorable bad guys in the series. His interaction with Kiryu is almost a cliché, but it's a lot of fun.

If there's one thing wrong with the story, it gets crazy about three-quarters of the way through. It's so anime that, for lack of a better word, you almost wonder if what you're seeing is a dream. It's brilliantly crazy, but in the context of the whole story, the whole thing stands out like a sore thumb, and again, it's something that probably wouldn't make it into a modern Yakuza movie.

Next, we need to talk about the extra stuff in Kiwami 2 because there is a lot of it. Some people didn't like how Yakuza 6 didn't have as many optional activities as other Yakuza games, but Kiwami 2 has a lot of in-depth side trips that each offer something different.

Yakuza Kiwami 2 Full Game

First, you have an improved version of the hostess club campaign from Yakuza 0. It has a crazy story and characters you can take on dates. The top-down clan minigame from Yakuza 6 is also back, but it's more strategic and has more exciting scenarios this time. These things can take a lot of time, and the changes I've already mentioned make them permanent.

But sometimes, you want to see Kiryu beat the crap out of everyone and everything. Those who want more violence outside the main story will be happy to hear that Kiwami 2 has the most combat-based activities. Kiryu goes into "dungeons" on Bouncer missions and gets powerful gear as a reward. With the return of the underground arena, you can test your skills against formidable opponents as often as you want. If you like how the fights work in Yakuza, you couldn't ask for more.

On top of all that, there are almost always side quests to do, which, as is typical for Yakuza games, range from serious substories that deal with real-world problems to just plain, fun adventures. Again, the way that Yakuza changes its tone is masterful. Oh, and that side quest from Yakuza 2 is, in fact, in Kiwami 2. You know it, and it still blows your mind.

Lastly, Kiwami 2 has a whole side story with Goro Majima that you can choose from the main menu. It's a new scenario showing what Majima did behind the scenes between Yakuza and Yakuza 2. It looks pretty interestingly at how the main yakuza clan runs its business, but don't expect a complete second game. Playing as Majima is excellent, and his unpredictable fighting style is just as fun as it was in Yakuza 0. However, unlike Kiryu, you can't level up and learn new skills or equip different weapons and armor. It's a condensed version of Yakuza that only lasts a few hours.

When you jump right into Kiwami 2's slightly expanded combat system, it's just as satisfying as Yakuza 6, but the focus is more on weapons. More and more enemies have weapons, and Kiryu can pick up dropped knives, bats, swords, and guns to use later, as long as they don't get broken up in the fight. It makes each fight more interesting by giving each weapon cinematic moves and combos.

With a mix of story battles, random street brawls, bouncer missions, and the underground arena, the combat system feels like it has much more room to breathe, which we came to appreciate during our 40-hour playthrough. If you want to get good at fighting in Yakuza, Kiwami 2 gives you more reasons than ever to get into the game.

Yakuza Kiwami 2 is one of many great PS4 remakes, and it's right up there with SEGA's best games. Even though the design of the PS2 era shows up every once in a while, the main story is about something much more exciting and dramatic. When you add some great extra content, you have an excellent Yakuza package that is hard to find fault with.
