Before starting we might think you would like to watch our Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered game review too. So be sure to check that too.

Spider-Man from Marvel feels important because of three things: First of all, it gives Sony a chance to make up for the fact that The Amazing Spider-Man movies were, well, not that amazing. Second, since Batman: Arkham Knight put an end to that great series, we need a superhero fix more than ever. Third, and most importantly, since Spider-Man 2 in 2004, there hasn't been a good Spider-Man game, which is wrong.

So it's a good thing that Marvel's Spider-Man brings our friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man back to his old self in every way.

What will catch your attention right away is how cinematic it is. Beautifully written cutscenes flow right into the game, so there are no loading screens to be seen. When you add in some of the most fluid and expressive combat and movement we've seen in this generation, you really feel like Spider-Man.

But first, we should definitely talk about the rhino in the room. Yes, Marvel's Spider-Man is based on the framework that Rocksteady set up with Arkham City and Ubisoft with Assassin's Creed. You explore a small, open world that is full of collectibles and side quests. You can level up and get new gadgets and upgrades by gathering and fighting everything in your way. Heck, you have to go to towers to open up more of the map, and you have to destroy enemy bases. It's that realistic.

The developer, Insomniac Games, had the good sense to tone it down a bit, though, so even though there is a lot to do, it never feels too much. Part of the reason for this is that you get access to this extra content bit by bit as you complete story missions and because the game often tells you to go do optional stuff between key missions. It also helps that the game is so much fun.

The webswinging is a lot of fun right from the start, and it gets even better as you unlock more upgrades. Spider-Man will shoot a web at the nearest surface and swing off it if you tap and hold R2 while he is in the air. Press X when you're at the top of your swing, and Spidey will start to fly through the air. If you get into a good rhythm, you can run along walls and jump off buildings to cover the length of New York in no time.

Being Spider-Man just feels so damn good. The best thing we can say about web swinging is that we never used fast travel, even though we got it at some point in the game. We really didn't want to miss another chance to see how big New York City is on spiderwebs. Man's

Scraps are just as fun, and Spider-Man's moves get a lot better as you get better. There are so many things you can do, from simple kicks to the face to firing a variety of gadgets from your web shooters. Spider-Sense is also helpful, as it lets Spider-Man know when an attack is coming and lets him avoid it with a simple tap of the circle button. If you wait until the last second, you'll hit the attacker in the face with the web, which could lead to a number of different things.

Even though the combat is fun, hard, and full of options, it never quite reaches the heights of the Arkham games, even though it uses the same framework. Dodging just doesn't feel as good as a good counterattack, but we do like that it gives us more options in battle.

Later on, enemies will attack you in different ways, making things a bit more complicated. You will be shot at, have grenades thrown at you, and have to fight enemies with shields and different weapons. Each type of enemy needs a different strategy, so you have to decide on the spot what to do first to take out the most dangerous ones. And yes, it fixes the problem that Arkham and Assassin's Creed had with combat being a little too easy, but sometimes it feels too chaotic to keep track of, and when that happens, you stop feeling like Spider-Man.

What surprises us a lot is how great the plot is and how well our favourite heroes and villains play their parts. Peter Parker and Spider-Man are right on, with all the 20-something drama, witty comments, and one-liners you'd expect. It's a little strange to feel sorry for a superhero, but there were times when we did.

The rest of the cast is just as good, but we can't say much more without giving away spoilers. If you really like Spider-Man, you will be in Spider-Man heaven. This is the world of a comic book, but no matter how you've met Spider-Man before, it still feels like home. The result is one of the best Spider-Man movies not based on the comics. Yeah, we said it.

What's not so great, though, are the many stealth parts where Spider-Man isn't there. Even though we hated these annoying sequences that broke our immersion in many other games, Insomniac thought it would be a good idea to add a lot of them here. So you go from a fluid, nonstop action epic to a stealth walking simulator where failing results in an old-fashioned "game over" screen. As fun as it sounds, it is.

In defence of the developer, it does show how much more powerful Spider-Man is than the average person, but it's used way too often and always plays the same way. But there is one part that really does work, and if it had stopped there, we wouldn't have anything to say about it. It wouldn't have been an everyday annoyance; it would have been a special moment.

Let's talk about performance while we're talking about criticism. Spider-Man runs at a very steady 30 frames per second, and during our playthrough, it never changed from that. We also put it through some very stressful situations, like racing through the city at an alarming speed and beating up a lot of bad guys in a storm of explosions. It didn't stop for a second. The problem was that our PS4 Pro was acting crazy. The fans were running so loudly that it sounded like a big plane was taking off. But this is a technical marvel, and it does go beyond what people think a PS4 game can do, just like God of War did earlier this year.

In the end, you have to buy Marvel's Spider-Man. It doesn't matter how you feel about our webbed superhero, because this game is so well made and so much fun to play. Like what the Arkham games did for Batman, this is pretty much the definitive version of the Spider-Man universe outside of the comics, and we can't wait for the inevitable sequel to explore more of it. Webslinging is a joy, fighting is a lot of fun, and the extra content and collectibles come up often enough but not often enough to be too much. Also, the plot and characters are a surprise, and some of the actors do great work that makes you feel real emotions. Marvel's Spider-Man is one of the best games released so far in 2018, and any PS4 owner will be proud to have it.
