After Rambo: The Video Game came out in 2014. It's easy to see why people didn't have high hopes for Teyon and Reef Entertainment's next joint project. The two have finally made it to the current generation of consoles. But they come with much bad press and another movie property. Can they do a better job than they did on the big screen? "Terminator Resistance" does an excellent job of trying to be a first-person shooter with only one player, but its lack of a AAA budget and repetitive combat hold it back.
In the Future War timeline, which was hinted at in The Terminator and T2 Judgement Day, the game takes place almost 30 years after Judgement Day. You play as Jacob Rivers, who has been marked by Skynet to be killed. What may seem like a paper-thin plot at first turns out to be a bit more interesting as the story continues.
Rivers quickly joins a ragtag group of scavengers, where he makes friends and forms relationships. It is where a lot of the story's heart comes from. We began to care about one or two of our companions, talking to them and checking on them after missions. One budding romance moves at a breakneck pace and a few plot twists are easy to guess, but these are minor problems in an otherwise good story about robots at war.
The most impressive thing about "Terminator Resistance" is how well this story is put together. You can do many side quests by getting to know characters better. But you have to choose suitable dialogue options for that to happen. It never goes beyond Telltale-style comments like "Jennifer liked that" or "Ryan will remember this." But it's an impressive addition to an experience we thought would be about the shooting. It gives you a reason to go back to your operations base after each mission, so you can talk to new people and strengthen your friendships.
This level of freedom is also reflected in the fact that you can complete game goals in any order you want. You can go wherever you want on an open-ended map and find resources to use in crafting and enemies to fight or avoid.
Speaking of that, combat isn't anything special. When you pull the trigger, enemies with standard assault rifles, shotguns, and pistols don't put up much of a fight. Even on the expected difficulty level, you can stand out in the open and rain bullets down on Terminators without getting hurt. All of it is too easy, making it only hard for a seven-hour campaign in the most complex setting.
You can do things differently, and sneaking around is a good option, but it almost seems like a waste of time because it's much easier to fight the robots head-on. There's not much reason to do things quietly, so when you run into a group of Terminators, your plasma rifle will usually do all the talking.
The goals aren't very creative; they don't involve much more than blowing up strongholds, killing certain robots, and moving around the environment to get to certain places. There might be multiple ways to get to an open location in this game, but you'll still do the same thing once you get there.
Considering all of this, it might seem strange that we still managed to enjoy playing the game. "Terminator Resistance" doesn't do anything special besides building relationships between the player and NPCs. However, it was easy enough to sit back and kill wave after wave of Terminators without too much trouble. It's a comforting first-person shooter that doesn't try anything new but does enough to make pulling the trigger a pleasant routine.

But if one part of the experience falls short, it's how it's put together. Graphically, it's not as good as other 2019 games. It is because it has a dull color palette that makes the world look like a sea of darkness. Some character models look better than others. But this is not a visual powerhouse. The framerate doesn't do much better with significant drops that make the game stop. The goal is 30 frames per second. But most of the time, it's hard to say if that goal is met.
Terminator Resistance has a campaign that is just about good enough for people who want to turn off their brains and enjoy some mindless action, even though it feels out of date in too many vital ways. Its efforts to make relationships and interactions more critical are a big part of what makes the experience unique. However, technical problems keep the vision from being fully realized.
