Destruction AllStars Game Review

I wanted Destruction AllStars, the latest game from Lucid Games, to give me the chance to wreck cars all day long, from left to right. Games like Destruction Derby are the most destructive things you can imagine. Destruction AllStars is not the game I expected it to be, even though it was a good idea to market it as a PS5 exclusive to get more people to sign up for Sony's PlayStation Plus.

Destruction AllStars tries so hard to have fun, chaos, and competition, but Lucid Games fails to do most of these things.

The way to play Destruction AllStars is easy, but it's hard to get good at it. You can easily speed up and bump into an opponent's vehicle to do damage. It's like bump cars, but you can choose from different colourful cartoon characters with special skills that can help a player win more often. To boost, you just have to move the right analogue stick to the left, right, or up, depending on which way you want to go. It's like a power slide that makes your opponent's attack stronger. So, if you can move faster than your enemy, you'll probably have a better chance of hurting them. It's all about timing, and it will take you a little while to get used to it before you can win more games. However, Destruction AllStars is enjoyable when you simply crash your car into another without thinking about it.

After you jump off the starting platform, you can choose from a few different kinds of cars. You have to hurry to the closest car and get it before another player does. I'm sorry, but the cars are all different. After you land, you will either get a sedan or an SUV. So, if you're lucky enough to get into an SUV, you'll have more car health points (HP) than you would in a smaller car like a sedan or a Volkswagen Beetle.

When your car sustains significant damage, you can exit it and look for another vehicle to drive. If you want that SUV, you have to wait for another set of cars to show up on the map. This means that other players will be able to run into you in the arena and put you out of the game. It's funny and exciting to jump out of the way of oncoming cars while you wait for the game to give you another one. I love how if your first car gets wrecked, you still have a chance to keep going and wreck your opponents. This gives players at least a fair chance to win.

The experience is fun because each of the 16 characters can do different things. You have a character called an AllStar who uses smoke to blind other players, and you also have an AllStar who can become invisible. In the game, the abilities of hero cars are called "Car Breakers," and the abilities of hero characters are called "Hero Breakers." Take Shyft as an example. He can become invisible on foot, and his ride looks like something from another world. You will have a better chance of winning in Gridfall, one of the game modes, if you play as Shyft. This is because you will be better positioned and will be able to catch your opponents by surprise. The game also has Fuego, a crazy person who loves to set things on fire. So, if you use his car wrecker, whatever you hit will catch fire and hurt you over time.

These ultimates and abilities that are unique to each character are a breath of fresh air because they make each mode feel different. There will come a time when you can't stop laughing because you beat an opponent in Gridfall by just sitting in a corner as Shyft and pushing them off the edge. The only thing I don't like about these characters is that they don't have enough depth. Even if you get to see them move and talk in various ways before the game, you'll be disappointed to learn that's all there is to it.

Destruction-style gamesAll-Stars depend a lot on how they play and how they are controlled. Your goal will be as simple as it gets: to destroy All done. It's the main part of their main mode, called "Mayhem." Just by doing that, you'll get points. You hit and run other players, use car breakers to cause more damage and wreckage, get a new car when your current one's HP is low, and do it all over again. It's fun while it lasts, but after an hour or so, it gets very dull. Even so, the goals of game modes like Gridfall, Carnado, and Stockpile aren't all that different. Carnado and Stockpile are more about working as a team, since each team has to collect as many gears as they can before the timer runs out. How do they differ? Carnado is more like sacrificing your vehicle that earned gears by damaging and wrecking other players' cars. While Stockpile is almost the same, players have to wait for cars to get destroyed, pick up gears, and put them in one of the banks.

None of the three game modes really got me excited, but Gridfall was the one I liked the most. It's kind of like a small battle royale with 15 other people. You have to be the last person standing in order to win. The hexagon-shaped platforms fall down at random, making players play more carefully as it gets harder to move around the arena. You can push players off the edge or lure them into traps that will kill them, or you can avoid all of them and live. When you win in Gridfall, especially when you're up against the last enemy player, you feel so incredibly happy, just like when you win in Apex Legends or Fall Guy. Because of this, Gridfall is my favourite mode.

The controls in Destruction AllStars are what make the game frustrating. It doesn't seem to act like you want it to. When you turn left or right, the controls are hard to use. This is especially true when you can't move your camera because the power thrusts are on the right analogue stick.I've looked at the controller bindings, and it's a shame to say that there's no way to move the camera with the right analogue stick. I can't figure out how to use the red markers that show where the other players are. When there are a lot of red arrows around your car or character, it's hard to tell what's going on.

The use of adaptive triggers is another thing to mention. I like the new feature, especially when there's tension when you pull L2 and R2 to speed up or slow down, but it doesn't add anything to the game other than being a pain. I turned this off by going into the settings on my PlayStation 5, since the game doesn't give me a way to do it.

Destruction AllStars shows off most of the PlayStation 5's features, such as how quickly the offline game modes load, how great the graphics look when ray tracing is turned on, how the DualSense adaptive triggers work, and how the haptic feedback works. But the Japan server is almost like a ghost town because the game came out a few months after the PlayStation 5 did, and most of the console sales are going to scalpers. Compared to the US Central server, I never have to wait in line with other players in any of the modes. The only problem I have is that the latency is terrible, and it's easy to tell when you're playing from Asia.

Microtransactions are an important part of this game. Even the second Challenge Series, which is the story mode of the game, is locked behind a paywall that costs 200 DP to get into. To unlock some levels, you will have to pay at least $4.99 to get 500 DP. I understand that this game is a PlayStation Plus exclusive and that you can't buy it yet with real money, but based on what we have right now, it's not worth USD $69.99, which is what Sony said the game would cost in case you missed it. It's fun to play, but it wouldn't last. I'd rather this stay a PlayStation Plus-only thing or be free to play.

Destruction AllStars can be memorable, but it's not one of those exclusive launch games that would make a big splash. I worry that Destruction AllStars won't have enough content to keep people playing for a long time. The game needs more power to make PS5 owners want to buy it after it's no longer part of PlayStation Plus. With a price tag of $69.99, we might see another live-service game get worse in just a few months. Until it's free-to-play, I don't see this game lasting more than a year, even with a good number of people playing.
