Forged in Shadow Torch Game Review

Check out these awesome new games Sonic Frontiers, Goat Simulator 3.

In the last five years, a lot of new games have been added to the Metroidvania genre. More and more studios are putting their hats in the ring to make a 2D platformer that's worth your money and builds on what made the genre popular again in the first place. Forged in Shadow Torch is the latest in a long line of Metroidvania games. At first glance, it might look boring and generic. Let's be honest: Forged in Shadow Torch's colour scheme isn't helping itself. Forged in Shadow Torch is a very polished game made by people who know a lot about Metroidvania games and what makes them so fun.

Forged in Shadow Torch starts off by introducing us to Torch City, a dieselpunk dystopia where "furtizens," or furry action stars who can walk and talk, live. It seems that the theme of games these days is animated mammals living in a post-apocalyptic world. Our main character is Rayton, a rough-looking rabbit who used to be a soldier. Believe me when I say you'll never find furry friends who look as rough as these. The Legion's rule over Torch City is harsh, and an army of Iron Dogs is used to keep it that way. Rayton fights the Legion with a single, huge, mechanically forged Shadow Torch as his only weapon.

Forged in Shadow Torch has a great group of characters and a detailed, well-thought-out world where they live. The dialogue is never too long or too descriptive, and the story is told at just the right pace to keep you up to date when the action slows down. Good thing, too, because the localization and voice acting can sometimes sound a little too janky, but I give this small Chinese studio a lot of credit for their efforts to localise, all things considered. Overall, Forged in Shadow Torch has a good story with enough mystery and likeable characters to keep you interested while you play the game's 2D platforming and solid fighting system.

Forged in Shadow Torch's level design is what you'd expect from a Metroidvania game, which isn't a bad thing at all. To get to the Metroid part of Metroid Vania, it's easy to make a boring map with a lot of sleepy, dull areas that are hard to go back through. The key to a good Metroidvania is to make a world that is fun to explore, but this is hard to do. Forged in Shadow Torch hits the sweet spot of great design.I often found locked doors that I knew led to good things, and it didn't take me long to figure out how to open them and get my reward. The pace of exploration is good throughout the whole game, and I didn't go back to too many places too long after I had seen them. Checkpoint terminals are put in great places, like right before boss fights or rooms where you have to fight, so that if you fail, you can just walk over and try again. Forged in Shadow Torch was made with your time in mind, which is a great trait in a time when games are always trying to trick you into playing for longer.

The tight platforming parts of Forged in Shadow Torch may have been the biggest and most pleasant surprise for me. Early in the game, there is a prison level where you get to try out your platforming skills. Dodging enemies and lasers in this level was some of the most fun I've had in a platformer in a while. That whole area was the first "Aha!" moment that made me realise that the platforming in Forged in Shadow Torch is smart and well put together. Platforming in the game is more about timing and repeating patterns than it is about solving puzzles. Platforming moves like wall slides and air dashes are typical for this type of game, but Forged in Shadow Torch does these moves incredibly well, with a fluid and precise feel.

Rayton has a huge mechanical fist, and this is your main weapon against the bad Iron Dogs. Light punches, heavy punches, and throwing are the main ways to fight. Cash, which you get by beating enemies, and special disks, which you get by exploring, are used to unlock new combos and skills. Two other weapons that can be unlocked can be used instead of the main Forged in Shadow Torch. These weapons have their own ways to move around the world, do combos, and take advantage of enemies' weaknesses. Your main weapons are the close-range Forged in Shadow Torch, the mid-range drill, and the long-range whip. Each has its own skill tree with branches and unlockable combos, and you can switch between them at any time while fighting. The enemies in the game are different enough that you'll always be coming up with new ways to change how you play.

The boss fights and the way stagger works are the parts of Forged in Shadow Torch combat that bother me the most. Boss mechanics change as you go through the game, and there are some fun fights to work your way through. However, each boss never changes its own mechanics enough to make it feel especially fun. Once you learn a boss's patterns and tells, the battle becomes a cycle of "lather, rinse, and repeat." I also got into more trouble than I thought I would because the enemy animations made it hard to tell what they were doing. At times, I thought I had hurt an enemy badly enough that I could start beating them up with everything I had. But the enemy was actually getting ready to attack, and I was the one who got hit because it was hard to tell when an enemy was out of action. It would be nice if Forged in Shadow Torch learned from other games and added a "Stunned" message above an enemy. If you did this, playing the game would be a lot more enjoyable.

Overall, there isn't much to dislike about Forged in Shadow Torch. I'm not a huge fan of the dieselpunk style, but I do like the artwork and attention to detail that went into making this world. Forged in Shadow Torch does not change the way Metroidvania games are made, but it enhances them. Forged in Shadow Torch is a game with tight controls, clever platforming, and a combat system that is always changing. From start to finish, Forged in Shadow Torch is a fun and interesting game.
