Astro's Playroom Game Review

Since the PlayStation 2 came out in 2000, I haven't been so impressed by a console. The generation of a console, as well as the innovation that each platform holder brings to the table, is what distinguishes it.In 2006, Microsoft released the popular Kinect, which changed the way people play games. In Just Dance, gamers can dance until they drop, and in Kinect Star Wars, they can swing an invisible lightsaber. The gaming experience has never been this immersive before.

Now that the PlayStation 5 is out in the wild, it has something to offer that its competitor doesn't. Is it because of the SSD? Yeah, but that only speeds up load times and makes the changes smoother. The DualSense controller is what sets the PlayStation 5 apart from other games. Sony Interactive Entertainment went way out of their way to make a device that makes your gaming experience more interesting.

As Sony has repeatedly stated, the company values generations. To live up to this principle, we were given a whole new controller that would let you feel every surface your characters walk on. The adaptive triggers and haptic feedback are what we call the resistance you feel when you pull the triggers on a bow.

Astro's Playroom, a platformer game made by SIE Japan Studios, is included for free with the PlayStation 5. It shows off all of DualSense's features. The Playroom was initially released as a gimmick for the camera on the PlayStation 4, with the intention of bringing the experience of augmented reality (AR) to the PS4. The Astro Bots are the ideal small experimental robots for demonstrating the DualSense.Their cuteness makes them even more fun to play with, and not just for kids.

What else could make it even better? It's a full game that's free!

When you start the game from the PlayStation 5's dashboard, you'll see a quick tutorial that shows you how to use the adaptive triggers and haptic feedback. When you start the game for the first time, you are taken to a kind of hub where you can choose which level to play first.

Each area named after a part has its own unique and beautiful level designs that show off both the DualSense and the PS5's own features. Take, for example, the GPU Jungle level. You can see ray-tracing in action with impressive reflections, volumetric lighting, and ambient occlusion at 60 frames per second in native 4K (if you have a 4K TV). Overall, Astro's Playroom looks absolutely incredible, especially in 4K.

As soon as you've gone far enough into the area and seen everything there is to see, you get a relic that you can keep in your PlayStation Lab. This can be the original PlayStation controller, the PocketStation, its discs, or even the PSVR components. I remember that when I unlocked the PS1 multitap relic, I didn't expect it to be V-shaped like the PS2 version. I've never had a PS1 multitap because it was hard to get one in the Philippines in the late 1990s. Still, being able to unlock these relics and see them in your PlayStation Lab makes you feel like you own them, even though you don't really.

Other levels enhance the DualSense. You can use all of them, from triggers that make it hard to pull down to haptic feedback that lets you feel the texture of the ground. If you are walking on sand, you will hear a grainy tap; if you are walking on wood, you will hear a soft tap vibration; and if you are walking on metal, you will hear an impactful light tap. Tap, tap, tap. It was interesting enough to use a bow. The triggers were set up to be hard to pull, so I had to use my fingers to do it. It almost felt real. Simply, wow.

These new features are so engaging that I haven't played any other game since I brought home my PS5 earlier today. I was blown away by how immersive the DualSense was, and I want to try it out in future first-party games like God of War: Ragnarok and Horizon: The Forbidden West, but especially Ratchet & Clank: Wild Rift.

Like most platformer games, the game has repetitive combat, but the puzzles are creative and surprisingly fun. In some parts, Astro is in a mechanical ball suit that you control with the touchpad on the controller. The ice blocks were slippery, and the curved platform gave me a few problems that I was glad to solve after a few tries. I haven't played a platform game for this long since Yooka-Laylee.

Astro's Playroom does a good job of showing off what the PlayStation 5 can do. It gives us the real next-generation experience we've been waiting for since the PlayStation 3. It's not as important to have "powerful" hardware that can run games at native 8K as it is to have a lot of games with interesting worlds and gameplay. This is a feature of the PlayStation 5, and Astro's Playroom will give you an idea of what Sony will be releasing in the next couple of years.
