You won't be disappointed by "Until Dawn," despite what your expectations might have been. The teen horror game, which was originally meant to be an exclusive for the PlayStation Move, hasn't had the easiest time getting to market, but Sony saw enough potential in the project to keep it going for this long, and Supermassive Games has delivered. This cheesy horror movie might not be for everyone, However, those who enjoyed The Walking Dead and Heavy Rain will find themselves right at home here, and they may even be surprised by how well it accomplishes what it sets out to do.
You take on the role of a group of obnoxious teenagers who gather at a lodge on a hill in cold British Columbia.The party marks the anniversary of a tragedy that happened a year ago, and it goes without saying that more tragedies are on the way. The story was written by Hollywood stars Larry Fessenden and Graham Reznick, and it shows. The plot is silly from the beginning to the end, but it never takes its tongue out of its cheek. It uses a lot of movie tropes, but it changes them just enough to avoid being a pure parody.
Not that you can tell right away, since the story starts out like any other slasher. The cast is made up of people with big heads and big behinds on purpose, and you'll want them to get what's coming to them from the start. We wouldn't go so far as to say the characters become likeable, but there is some character development.This is one of the benefits of the developer's decision to hire professional writers instead of writing the scripts in-house.
The writing is surprisingly good, but in a way that makes you want to cringe. The title throws out false leads whenever it can, which helps keep things interesting over the course of the campaign's eight or so hours. More importantly, the twists are complex and don't require the same huge leaps of logic as a Quantic Dream game. It's still silly at times, but there's a reason for it that makes the story much more complicated than you might expect. Considering all the different ways things could have gone, this is a pretty big deal.
Cause and effect are, of course, a big part of the game and a big part of why people like it. The gameplay is mostly based on Telltale's, and it's also the most exciting part of the game. But you won't be changing the whole story, and this is a smart way to do it. A small decision that leads to a cut on a main character's head can come back to haunt you hours later, and the main characters' deaths are a real worry. Our first playthrough ended with only one main character still alive, and after two full runs, we're still not sure how to keep everyone alive.
In this way, games like Beyond: Two Souls cheat, but Supermassive Games has worked hard to make sure that your actions have consequences, which aren't always clear at first. On our second try, we found cutscenes, dialogue choices, and even whole game sequences that we had no idea existed on our first try. Even though you can find the seams if you look for them, this game is more important than most like it. At least, it's as good as Heavy Rain.
Even though it has some good things in common with the famous PlayStation 3 adventure, it also has some bad things. Actors like Hayden Panettiere and Rami Malek, who are known to most people, do a good job. Still, the developers chose to shoot each performance separately and add body capture afterward. As a result, the facial animations don't always work well together, creating an "uncanny valley" effect similar to that seen in L.A. Noire.Also, the stars don't seem to get along as well as they did in "The Last of Us," which was one of the best parts of the movie.
Still, the game is pretty to look at, and not just because of the cheerleader bodies and bulging biceps. Built with technology from Guerrilla Games' underused Killzone: Shadow Fall, the game has a lot of atmosphere as you travel through frozen landscapes and dirty caves. Even though the performance isn't perfect and framerate judders happen often, they aren't a big deal because the game is usually so slow. The same is true for how the characters move, which can be vague and sloppy at times.
The most impressive thing is how well the developer makes use of the fixed camera angles. Some great depth-of-field effects bring objects in the foreground and background into focus, and the developer can guide your eye without taking control. It's important, especially when it comes to the big jump scares, because you'll often walk right into them by accident. If you want, the game can even use the PlayStation Camera to record short clips of these moments. These clips are called "Cheap Shots."
Of course, it's important to point out that this is not a psychological experience like Silent Hills, but the fact that Peter Stormare plays a shrink does change the experience subtly based on your fears. But even though it doesn't get under your skin, the string-driven music and dark lighting create an unsettling atmosphere that will make you nervous enough for the jump scares to work. Many of these are cheaper than those old YouTube shock videos, so get ready for a lot of them.
The second time around, these don't work as well, but the game is fun enough to play again. In addition to wanting to know how the story goes, you'll pick up a lot of clues and items along the way. Each one is fully rendered and serves a specific purpose in the overall plot.Totems can even predict what will happen in the future so you can plan accordingly.If you collect all of them, you can watch an extra cut scene that tells you more about the story. A small number of "Making Of" videos are just the cherry on top.
You can check out the above collectibles with either the motion controls or the analogue stick. Here, the DualShock 4 is used to its fullest extent. The touchpad is used to turn pages, and the gyroscope can be used as a torch control. We liked the gestures better than the other option, which was more traditional. Still, neither solution is perfect, and it seems like the studio should have focused on one or the other and made it better instead of trying to fit both styles at the same time.
Until Dawn is a pleasant surprise, and fans of stories where you can do things will like it. It works as a cheesy horror movie, but the story goes beyond a simple slasher, even though it stays deliberately silly the whole time. The controls are sometimes hard to use, and the performance could have been captured better. Still, neither of these problems is scary enough to pull you out of the plot of the popcorn movie, which is kept going by the interesting, if not hugely important, butterfly effect. Then, they promised a silly romp, and this one will keep you busy all night.
