Axiom Verge Game Review
Check out these awesome new games Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII, Inertial Drift: Twilight Rivalsm.
The game was made by just one person, Tom Happ, as a labor of love. It's like getting a special tour of his childhood when you play it. When you look at some of the more random weapons, you'll immediately think of Contra, and one of the game's main areas looks a lot like the first level of Rygar. Even the look and feel of the game are pretty much taken straight from Metroid. Happ's love of old NES and SNES games has shaped his own game in a big way, which is a good thing.
You play as Trace, a regular guy who ends up on a strange planet. You don't know how or why you got here, but you're determined to find out. Unfortunately, it seems like most of the natives want you dead. This makes it hard to find out the secrets of the planet and solve your own problems.
You are dropped into this new world with nothing to protect you. A friendly but faraway voice says, "If you go to the left, you'll find a gun." After getting that first tool, you can move on to the next room and into the main hallway, where there's another one waiting for you. It's pure Metroidvania gameplay: find an item, use it to get past an obstacle, find a new item, and do it all over again.
Instead of coming up with new ideas, Axiom Verge improves. Modern ideas keep it from making the same mistakes as its predecessors. There are a lot of save points spread out evenly across the map, puzzles can be tricky but are never unclear, and most importantly, you always know where to go without being told.
Since exploring is a big part of the game, we're happy to say that there are a lot of hidden items to find, and none of them are just filler. There are dozens of hidden weapons, and each one is good for something different. When you go the extra mile and look for treasure, it pays off because having the right piece can make your next boss fight a little bit easier or give you another way to get past an obstacle. You don't have to look for these extra things, but if you want to get the most out of the experience, you should look in every nook and cranny.
When it comes to fighting, the most important thing is to use the right gun and be quick and sneaky. Some enemies just walk back and forth to attack, while others lunge and claw at you. Trace, on the other hand, is just as agile and has no trouble firing a barrage of alien gunpowder at his enemies. Samus Aran moves like a slow, heavily armored tank. Trace, on the other hand, moves like a hyperactive, heavily armed acrobat.
Boss battles are a little harder. Most, if not all, of them are home to a huge and horrifying mutant, like a giant slug with cannons on its back or a flying worm that throws bombs as it flies. It's common to lose more than a few lives to these guys, but that's never a problem in modern games because there's always a save point nearby.
So far, so Metroid. But even though Axiom Verge's design is a bit formulaic, it has a few tricks up its sleeve, the most important of which is the "glitch gun." The glitch gun gives you control over your surroundings, almost like a Game Genie cart. At other times, it's more of a toy than anything else. For example, it can be used to break down a wall of pixelated debris.
The glitch gun affects each enemy in a different way. Some enemies freak out, some are frozen in place, and so on. In the same way, it has different effects on the environment. If you play around with it, you might find a hidden room, get a power-up earlier than you should, or just get stuck in a wall. No matter what happens, it is always fun to mess around with.
Oh, I'm trying things out. It's an important part of every great Metroidvania game, just like exploring. Not only does the game give you a set of tools that you can use to try new things, but one of those tools is made for breaking the rules of the game. It's such a simple idea, but it works well enough to give this already great title a whole new layer.
Axiom Verge is the PlayStation's own Metroid, as some news outlets said before it came out. Even though that might sound a little bit insulting, it's hard to deny that this and Nintendo's own space adventure have a lot in common. Still, being compared to one of the most popular game series of all time can't be anything but a compliment. If you've never understood why people enjoy games of this nature, then it's unlikely that reading this would convince you otherwise. Fans of the genre, on the other hand, will love Tom Happ's opus.
