Hello Neighbor 2 Game Review

Check out these awesome new games Overcooked! All You Can Eat, Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey.

After it came out in 2017, the first Hello Neighbor became a cult favorite. Since then, it has spawned a number of different games, such as Secret Neighbor, which focuses on multiplayer play. But Hello Neighbor 2 is a fully-fledged sequel that has come out after five long years and a lot of gameplay demos. Even though people had been waiting for it, tinyBuild has finally delivered the goods, which, unfortunately, don't leave much of an impression after the credits roll.

In the beginning of Hello Neighbor 2, you sneak around your creepy neighborhood until you run into The Neighbor, the main bad guy. After an opening scene where you try to get away, you crash into a nearby barn and are given a short tutorial on how the game works. Most of your time will be spent solving puzzles while avoiding the people who live in your neighborhood.

Mixing point-and-click adventure puzzles with stealth elements is a simple idea. This time, you have a whole street to look around and four houses to break into to find clues and pieces of the puzzle. Your main goal is to find a missing child you think is being held at the local museum. In each chapter, you have to sneak around people's homes looking for new keys to get into more parts of the museum at night.

Hello Neighbor 2 is best at the Metroidvania parts, where you slowly solve each house like a puzzle box. When you go back to the museum in the evening and find more things there, you feel like you're making progress, which is a sign of an interesting gameplay loop. Even though the activities and puzzles you do are fun, the program has a lot of baggage that makes it hard to enjoy.

YOU ARE NOT SEARCHING FOR THESE DROIDS.

The most disappointing thing about Hello Neighbor 2 is how bad the AI is. The whole game is based on avoiding these threats, and tinyBuild says it will learn from how the player plays. This makes everything feel very scripted. The enemies will keep doing the same two things until you solve a puzzle and move to a new area with a new, but still repetitive, path.

When you get caught, things get worse. There's no tension because you can easily run out of the house and watch as the AI chases you before walking back inside, or you can just get caught and lose the items you found only in that house. During the whole journey, there's never a feeling of danger, and the AI is so easy to trick that it's closer to being a minor annoyance than a scary presence. When you run out to the street and see that the AI can't leave the house, all of the tension is gone.

Each house has a different bad guy. Some of them have guns, but it never feels like the game is getting harder. Instead, you're just fighting a different version of the AI. In one case, the AI completely broke down, walking in and out of the same door over and over again. This gave us the chance to run around and solve all the puzzles. If they did see us, they would still be broken, so they would just run faster in and out of the doorway.

The puzzles are fun, and you'll need to do things like figure out safe codes using children's building blocks or figure out the right keys to play on a piano in order to move forward. None of the answers are clear, but they're not so hard to figure out that they're annoying. Hello Neighbor 2's environmental storytelling is definitely one of its best parts, as it uses clever visual clues to point you in the right direction. It's just too bad that the AI doesn't add to it by acting like a real threat.

We've been bugged.

In fact, Hello Neighbor 2 is full of bugs and glitches that make the game difficult to play. There were many times when the AI would be right in front of you and not know you were there. You could also stand above the AI's line of sight in some rooms to avoid their eyes and wait for them to leave.

You can also run into bugs with the items you find, like when they disappear from your inventory or don't come back after you've been seen. We were lucky that none of the items we lost were needed for a quest, but this bug could be a game-breaker for some people. Other online players have already said that they had to restart the game because of problems like this.

The worst bug we ran into was a crash that happened right before the end of the game. This wouldn't have been a big problem, but Hello Neighbor 2 didn't save at any point, so all the progress we made in one sitting was lost, and we had to start over from the beginning. If you really want to play the game, you might want to wait for a patch or two to fix this problem and then try again.

An Expensive Adventure

All of this is made worse by the fact that Hello Neighbor 2 costs too much. At the time of its release, the game cost £33.49 or $39.99, which is way too much for what you get out of it. Even if Hello Neighbor 2 didn't have any bugs or AI problems, it would still be a 3-hour game with not much to do again. Puzzles can only be solved one way, so there's no reason to try something different.

To add insult to injury, two more levels are locked behind paid DLC that costs a ridiculous £11.24 or $13.49. Hello Neighbor 2 is already pretty short, so it's a real kick in the teeth for players to find that another 50% of the levels are locked behind another chunk of money. It feels like an attempt to take advantage of people, and it might be a way to make up for the costs of having it in Xbox Game Pass from the start. With file sizes of around 10 MB, it's clear that these are already part of the game and locked behind a paywall.

GOODBYE NEIGHBOR

Even though people liked the first game, it seems like not much has been added to it. Instead, the time has been spent making the world feel bigger than before. Even though that wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing, it seems like more time should have been spent making things feel more dynamic and fleshing out the experience to build tension for the player.

Even though Hello Neighbor 2 is now available on Xbox Game Pass, it's hard to recommend it because it has a lot of technical problems and high prices that leave a bad taste in our mouths. There isn't much suspense, and there's no story. There's also nowhere to go back to after the credits roll, if you make it that far without losing your progress. If you want to scare yourself this holiday season, you should look somewhere else.
