Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey takes place 10 million years before the start of human history. It tells the story of how humans evolved from apes, with a focus on the dangers that forced our fuzzy ancestors to learn the skills that led to our success.
In Ancestors, which takes place in prehistoric Africa, the player controls an ape who is thrown into the jungle with almost no instructions. In fact, a common theme of the game is that you'll have to learn from your mistakes and use trial and error to make tools, find food, and help the rest of your ape clan survive in this harsh prehistoric world. The ultimate goal is to learn, grow, and move up the evolutionary ladder while making your way through a dangerous world.
The idea is definitely new and interesting, but it's clear that this is a survival game at heart. Every day, you'll need to keep drinking water, make sure your ape gets enough to eat, and deal with the fear that comes up when you leave the safety of your clan. You can use and train your primate senses to get a better idea of what's going on around you (sight, sound, smell, etc.). On the screen will be important things you can interact with, as well as places in the distance that give you new information about the huge game world. You'll have to stand still for this mechanic to work, which is annoying, but it's kind of like how a wild animal might stand still and use its sharp senses to get a clearer picture of the world around it.
When you're not standing still, you can try to become the real king of the swingers. As you move through the jungle and get close to a tree trunk or a rock face, you will automatically start climbing. When you get to the top, you can jump from branch to branch in some of the game's most thrilling parts. Sadly, these times are often spoiled by controls that are hard to use and too many falls when there aren't enough branches to land on. But in the first few hours of the game, when you don't know how to deal with dangerous animals on the ground, finding safety in the canopy is the only way to stay alive.
When it comes to the dangers in the jungle, your ape is prone to hysteria from fear. As your fear of the unknown increases, you'll lose control of your character. For this reason, it's just as important to keep an eye on this metric as it is to keep an eye on your thirst or hunger. But what is there to really be afraid of? Well, the thick jungle plants hide a lot of dangerous animals that could hurt apes that aren't armed. Animals like wild cats, crocodiles, and eagles that take advantage of opportunities make it hard to explore the world and stay alive. At the beginning of the game, it's hard to avoid these interactions, and the game's awkward dodging system makes it frustratingly hard to avoid getting hurt.
As the game Ancestors goes on, your tribe learns new skills, and the rocks and sharpened sticks you get used to using help you become better at dealing with the dangers of the jungle. Since the game is about how things change over time, each time your clan faces a problem, it learns something new. Once you've gained enough experience, you'll be able to add new skills to the gene pool, which is basically a skill tree. In the menu, you can build and expand neural pathways, bringing the best parts of the last generation forward and leaving the worst parts behind. After a certain point in the game, you can also speed up evolution by anywhere from 15 to 100 years. These evolutionary jumps are the same speed as real evolution, and as the game goes on, you can watch your ape clans become more and more like humans.
This is a clever system, but it has a lot of problems. You could lose your whole clan if you play badly or just have bad luck. If that happens, you'll have to start over with a new lineage. You might have to learn most of the skills you learned with your last clan all over again, which can take a long time and be very frustrating. Again, it's similar to what happens in nature, but there needs to be a better balance here between realism and making it more like a game. After all, most gamers don't have the time or desire to do the same thing over and over again!
The animations of the apes are very lifelike, and it's exciting to see a saber-toothed tiger for the first time. What this game does best, though, is pay a lot of attention to visual details. The prehistoric world around the animals looks great, too. The ecosystem is shown as an endless tangle of trees and Savannah that begs to be explored. It's just too bad that it can be so hard to get around in it.
Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey has a lot of potential, but it needs to get rid of endless repetition and hard-to-use controls. This game is fun for people who are really into survival and exploration, but for everyone else, it's so repetitive that it'll drive you crazy.
