Oddworld: Soulstorm Game Review

Oddworld is probably one of the most memorable platform games I played when I was young. I remember going to a friend's house and going through his PlayStation games one by one until one caught my eye, but there were two of them. The first was Syphon Filter, a well-known third-person shooter from Bend Studios, and the second was Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee.
The first time I played Oddworld, it felt... strange. I still remember side-scrolling platformers like Tarzan on the original PlayStation and Toy Story on the Sega Genesis, but Oddworld's strange character designs and levels surprised me and got me hooked. I never got to finish it because I fell in love with a shooter called Syphon Filter.
But that doesn't mean Oddworld isn't a great game. Back when it came out, I probably liked shooters more than platformers. Over time, things changed, and I came to love this type of game more than any other. Oddworld Soulstorm, a PS5 game, has arrived.
The way Soulstorm is played is the same as its predecessors, and it never went in a different direction. I like it when developers are consistent with their work, but sometimes that makes it hard to make changes to the franchise. Still, the game is a typical side-scrolling platformer. As Abe, you move from one platform to another, press the directional pads to make your huge cult of Mudokon follow you, solve different puzzles, and see how fast you can finish a level with as few deaths as possible. The developers also added a new way to play: crafting. You can make flamethrowers and smokescreens. This is a nice addition, but the game seems fine without it.
If you get upset easily when things don't go as planned, Oddworld Soulstorm might not be for you. There will be more times when you fail your run. You may need to re-enlist all the Mudokons you lost before the checkpoint and then carefully lead them through again. It can feel like a chore to do it again, but it's fun and challenging at the same time because it gives you a sense of accomplishment when you finish a stage without dying.
But for a platformer, controls should also be one of the most important things to think about when making the game. Soulstorm does get some things right about how to control it, especially how Abe moves. But throwing water at a line of fires doesn't feel right at all, and it starts to get annoying. Another bother is that, at least for me, stealth has never worked at all. If Abe makes too much noise, an enemy named Slig will notice him. Falling from a high platform already makes too much noise, which alerts the enemy right away.
Whether it's good or bad, the gameplay can be a turnoff for some, but fans are always happy about it. The characters in Soulstorm are still great, and the dialogue is still as cringe-worthy as ever.
Many players complained that Soulstorm has bugs that stop them from making progress. I've probably been lucky enough to avoid them. When you play the game on the PS5, you can take advantage of the DualSense's tricks. Abe's heartbeat is the only thing I can really feel. Also, don't get your hopes up about a feature called "adaptive trigger," because it's not here. Soulstorm, on the other hand, still uses the PS5's power. When you play the game on a 4K screen, it looks great. It's very clear, and for an independent game, the graphics are very good. Plus, it loads pretty quickly compared to the regular PS4 and the PS4 Pro.
Oddworld Soulstorm might not be better than what you were hoping for, but it is a nice take on Abe's Exodus. There are a few problems, like the throwing and sneaking mechanics, but that doesn't take away from Oddworld Soulstorm's strong points, like its challenging levels, nice graphics on the PS5, and funny cast of characters.
