Ghostwire: Tokyo is a decent game, but it feels like something that could’ve launched fifteen years ago. The story sets up a mysterious premise with intriguing breadcrumbs, but it never follows through. Instead, it leans on thin, predictable writing that often feels clichéd and tries too hard to be impactful. More than once, I actually laughed at how forced some of the “serious” moments were. The pacing doesn’t help either—there are plenty of moments where you play for five seconds only to be dragged back into another cinematic. Why? To pad out the runtime? Because honestly, length doesn’t matter if you don’t know how to use it.
That philosophy extends into the gameplay. At first, combat looks great—flashy hand gestures, colorful effects, and a satisfying power fantasy. But it stops evolving after the first hour or two. What kept me engaged was seeking out bigger groups of enemies, since mowing down several at once with a charged attack, exploding fuel tank, or by ripping out their cores felt genuinely fun. Unfortunately, the controls are stiff and unresponsive, which makes precise aiming pointless since the heat-seeking spells mostly hit regardless—cool concepts, but lacking polish and depth.
Despite Bethesda calling this a “horror” game, it never really earns that label. Sure, the enemy designs are fascinating and the lonely streets of Tokyo create a great atmosphere, but actual scares are rare—there’s barely even a single jump scare. Side missions mix things up occasionally, with a handful experimenting with perspective and mechanics in interesting ways. But the majority boil down to the same formula: talk to indistinguishable spirits, then fight the same handful of enemies.
Even so, I still sunk about 38 hours into the game doing nearly everything. That says a lot about how fun the core loop can be, even if it’s shallow. Ghostwire: Tokyo works well as a “podcast game”—the kind of title you can zone out with while collecting trinkets, fighting enemies, and exploring an occasionally charming Tokyo backdrop. Just don’t expect much more than that, or you’ll probably find it disappointingly generic and repetitive.
