Battlefield 2042 Game Review

Check out these awesome new games Kena Bridge of Spirits, Maiden of Black Water.

The video game industry never stops, and just a week after Activision released Call of Duty: Vanguard, Battlefield 2042 is here to try to eat its lunch. But what it has to offer couldn't really be called a main course. EA DICE has made a great appetizer, kind of like a crowd-pleasing tomato soup, but it doesn't have enough meat on its bones to be a full meal. It will definitely reach those goals with a lot of support after it comes out, but that content is still months or even years away. When Battlefield 2042 shows you the bill, it wants you to be excited about what's to come, not just hope you like the first dish.

The main menu has three modes: There are classic Conquest skirmishes in All-Out Warfare, and Breakthrough, which was in Battlefield 1 and Battlefield V, is back. Hazard Zone is a brand-new mode where teams have to get data drives and get out of the area before other teams can kill them. Portal brings back old maps that can be edited to make new modes.

You'll probably spend most of your time in Conquest and Breakthrough, which are at the heart of what makes a Battlefield game work. The popular race to take away all of the other team's tickets by taking over points on the map hasn't changed much. This time, up to 128 players can fight for victory on PlayStation 5, so the maps are bigger than ever.

They take place all over the world in the near future, from the dusty places of Qatar and beached ships in India to the open-air cargo hangars of Singapore. Each one has the potential to show what our own Earth could look like if we don't stop global warming, as tornadoes and violent weather destroy the landscape around you. However, they're all a bit too big.

People have always said that in past Battlefield games, you just have to run for a few minutes to find the action and then die as soon as you get there, but there have always been ways to avoid this. That could mean getting in a vehicle, spawning on teammates, or reading the map correctly to figure out where the action will go next. This time, though, those options are still there, but there is so much empty space between the goals that the game feels just as much like a running simulator as it does a shooting simulator. You'll just have to accept these times of boredom as part of the flow if there's no way to get to the next objective or a friend who can pick you up.

Since there aren't that many maps at launch, you may also play the same ones over and over again. In fact, only seven. You're at the mercy of matchmaking, but it's too easy for the game to load up the same map twice in a row. You got beat up there once, and you don't want to do it again.

At least the shooting is as good as it normally is. Battlefield has always been a series where where you put the iron sights matters, since you have to think about things like bullet drop before you shoot. Things won't change much in the near future, because there will still be a wide variety of weapons for assault rifle users, SMG experts, and sniper rifle masters.

You can round out your loadout with tools like the grappling hook, the ballistic shield, and the sentry guns. This is where Battlefield 2042 moves away from the old class system. It is tied to the Specialist you choose to play as. Anyone can equip repair tools, ammo and medical crates, and insertion beacons. This blurs the lines between the traditional roles that games have had in the past. Each Specialist has a unique perk, but these aren't much of a replacement for the clear jobs that soldiers used to have. You could say that this is a more freeing way to do things, but it also means that those very important tools might be left behind. If you're not talking to the other people in your squad, you'll probably start with the rocket launcher or the armor plating. We'd say it's not a change for the better.

All of this adds up to a Conquest mode that keeps doing the same old thing, which is sometimes exciting and intense and sometimes boring. You can find action at Breakthrough. You can only work on two goals at a time, and the chaos is concentrated in certain parts of the map, so you'll always be right in the middle of things. This is where you go to have fun; we spent most of our free time there.

Still, this is Battlefield. It's still a game where getting one kill feels like a big deal and getting back an objective deserves a war medal. Even if it doesn't happen often, when you go on a killing spree and wipe out an entire enemy squad, you feel like you're on top of the world. Even though there have been changes under the hood, there is still a lot to like about this place. When there is a lot going on, it feels great to play.

Then there's Hazard Zone, which has to be the weakest part of the set. It's hard and there aren't many chances to start over. Teams of four have to search maps from the standard multiplayer mode for data drives, which they can then use to extract. If everyone on your team dies, you're out of the game for good.

The mode is meant to be a slightly less serious version of Escape from Tarkov, but it's so boring. Since you're playing on the same huge maps as Conquest and Breakthrough, you'll once again find yourself running around and not shooting much. This time, though, it really does happen, which makes for a boring mode that we won't go back to very often. It wouldn't be surprising at all if Hazard Zone ends up like Battlefield V's Firestorm mode and doesn't get much attention after launch.

Longtime fans will be most interested in the Portal mode, which remasters popular maps from Battlefield 1942, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, and Battlefield 3 for an experimental mode where you decide the goals and physics. The mode completely lives up to the promise made before it came out: you can go back to places like Arica Harbor, Caspian Border, and the Battle of the Bulge and play them again, but this time with fun tweaks and changes that bring them into the modern age. You have to go to an outside website to make your creation come to life, but if you look through the in-game server list, you can always find some interesting options with custom rules.

These are what will make your trip down memory lane more than just a short break, as fun variations create interesting situations like putting two armies from different times against each other or changing your loadout every time you spawn.

There are some limits, but what's already there keeps us coming back for more and making guesses about what might come next. Operation Metro, anyone? Even though this puts EA DICE in an awkward position, we've had just as much fun going back to these older maps as we have learning the new ones.

But Battlefield games never come out without problems, and Battlefield 2042 is no exception. Things like a scoreboard and voice chat with your squad are missing. Then there is a long list of technical problems, most of which have to do with problems with the graphics. Planes can get stuck in the air, pieces of destroyed vehicles can float in the air, and shady killcams can fall under the map. Matches get stuck on the map screen and never start. Bugs make it impossible to redeploy in the middle of a match, and Trophies don't unlock correctly either. This is the worst thing you can do. The user interface sometimes shows the wrong objective to attack, and there is no way to keep track of your wins and losses because there is no stats screen.

Battlefield 2042 doesn't have some of the most important features that make multiplayer games what they are today. It shouldn't have come out without them, and that's not even counting the many bugs that were present at launch. They're not even small annoyances; we couldn't even join matches because the game randomly stopped working on us. Most problems can be fixed by going back to the main menu and starting matchmaking over, but that's not the point. The game shouldn't be in this state to begin with. It's already been put off once, so maybe the title needs another one.

Battlefield 2042 isn't finished when it comes out, but it's hard to deny that it still has the magic spark that made previous games so popular. Too many bugs and glitches ruin the fun, and there aren't enough maps. But with the great Portal mode, Battlefield 2042 does just enough to make us want to play it. Even though we wish many things were better, Battlefield does it best.
