Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart Game Review

Check out these awesome new games Hitman 3, It Takes Two.

This year, it's been hard for die-hard Sony fans to get their hands on a PS5. The main problem is that scalpers are taking advantage of the next-generation consoles' scarcity and putting crazy prices on them. Fans of Ratchet & Clank, a platform game by Insomniac Games, may make PS5 resellers hate them even more. Even with the new $70 price tag, Rift Apart, the sequel to the 2016 reboot, is a good PS5 game, but it's not a good enough reason to buy a PS5 from a scalper for $1000.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart used to just be a cartoony third-person sci-fi adventure platformer, but now it's a huge hit on the PlayStation. Since the game was made by the same talented people who made Marvel's Spider-Man and Miles Morales, you wouldn't think twice about buying the game, which I would call an Insomniac staple.

So, if you like games like Uncharted, The Last of Us, and Marvel's Spider-Man because they look like real life, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart evens the playing field with its beautiful Pixar-style graphics.

Rift Apart picks up where the 2016 reboot left off, with our favorite Lombax, Ratchet, and their tiny metal companion, Clank, celebrating the Festival of Heroes on the planet Megalopolis. As part of the party, Clank gave his best friend a device that could help them travel between dimensions on their quest to find the other Lombaxes. However, that didn't stop the main villain, a mad scientist named Dr. Nefarious, from ruining such an important event with his treachery.

During their fight against Nefarious throughout Megalopolis, Ratchet inadvertently fires his gun at the mechanism that opens dimensions, which is known as the Dimensionator. As a result, the Dimensionator is destroyed, which results in the collapse of dimensions across all of the universes. Because the stability of the dimensions is in jeopardy, the two individuals are attempting to resolve the terrible incident as quickly as possible before it is too late.

The plot of Rift Apart is new and great. Other than putting in a white female Lombax named Rivet, the studio didn't use anything from any of its other Ratchet & Clank games. It is executed competently despite the fact that the story still follows the "good versus evil" formula. This is due to the story's effective pacing, improved voice acting for the characters (particularly Nefarious, whose voice is hilarious, loud, and full of mouth), and a conclusion that is anticipated but is still exciting.

There are lore audiotapes about the Lombax race all over one of the planets. Even though it's not part of the main plot, I'm more interested in what happened to Ratchet's kind than in the main story. There are around 12 lorbs that need to be found. Each one contains a story about a significant occasion in the history of the Lombax, and the final lorb seems to include an aural teaser of what lies ahead for the duo. It's possible that I'm reading too much into it, but it seems possible that Insomniac Games has future intentions to expand the Ratchet & Clank universe. It's the kind of tale I'd love to see continued in the franchise's next installment, or maybe even in a spin-off that stands on its own.

Rift Apart wouldn’t be a "Ratchet & Clank" game if it didn’t have its most iconic feature: its insanely vast arsenal of weapons. Even though this is an action-adventure shooter, the series is known for its crazy guns. There are about 20 weapons. One is unlocked when you find all ten Spybots, which puts you up against well-balanced obstacles that can also be difficult at times. Two more are unlocked when you start "Challenge Mode," which is like a new game plus for the game.

I love the fact that there are so many interesting weapons in the series. The game provides a large number of them and can be very overwhelming at times. Each of them feels different, and they do different things, like the Doombringer, which calls up little minion bots that attack the target and eat it. You will also have the Warmonger, a classic rocket launcher with a lot of power, and the Cold Snap, a weapon that can disable goons by turning them into ice cubes.

Holding the Triangle button, which stops the game and brings up a weapon wheel, makes it easy to switch between them. This gave me the chance to try out a lot of them, which made the fights more interesting and fun. It had me constantly swap between the Negatron Collider after stunning a batch of enemies with the Lightning Strike's chain effect that immobilizes anything within its radius and closing the battle with a huge bang with the Warmonger rocket launcher.

The haptic feedback and adjustable triggers of the DualSense turned out to be how we had anticipated them to be. When I pull the trigger on the Blast Pistol, the rate of fire quickly goes up, and the R2 trigger will kick back to match the blast of the gun. Otherwise, when I wanted to shoot the gun with a single shot, I would have felt the trigger's resistance. Insomniac used the DualSense feature to its fullest, which is why the controller gives that immersive feeling.

Rift Apart has the same basic idea as the original game from 2002 and the games that came after it. The puzzles are still tight and hard, and the platforming sections are still fun.

With dashes and magnetic boots, Ratchet and Rivet can go through different places and reach new heights without any trouble. Plus, the Rift Tether mechanic we just added gives our playable Lombaxes more mobility. I can easily get out of battles I can't win, put myself in a better place to take a break, and then come back to fight the enemies.

People who thought Rivet would have her own set of skills might be let down by this. The female Lombax fights and uses weapons in the same way that Ratchet does.

So let's talk about the character who is shown a lot in the trailers for Rift Apart. The only thing that makes Rivet stand out is her quirky and strong-willed personality. Some people don't think this is a big deal, but I thought Rivet would be able to do more. For example, what can she do that Ratchet can't? Since Ratchet's wrench can only do so much, it would have been cool to see a unique melee combo or finisher with her hammer. But if you use a hammer? That's more dangerous than a wrench. Plus, her robotic arm doesn't do much. It's just a plot twist to make things more interesting between two other characters.

Rivet's presence felt more like a necessary addition to make the characters more diverse than like a fully playable character with her own special abilities. I would have liked to say this doesn't matter, but it's hard not to.

This time, Clank can still be played through minigames, so don't expect any Secret Agent Clank levels. You get to solve different puzzles that are spread out over three levels. This is shown when Clank tries to fix the broken rifts between dimensions.

You have to use spheres, like the Lift sphere, to control the running "Clank possibilities," which are ghosts of Clank. It lowers the gravity so the Clank ghosts can jump to another platform. Another one would be the Speed Sphere, which makes any Clank ghosts that touch it move faster. Some of these obstacles force you to use different spheres in order to get past them.

You also have Glitch, which acts like an anti-virus with machine guns to get rid of unwanted programs that look like aliens. These minigames are a nice break from the big, intense battles. It's nice to have them, and they don't seem to get in the way of the story.

Still, I think Clan isn't used enough. He should have been given one level, at which point I could use all of their skills. I know that Clank is just a side character so that Rivet can join the series, but I hope that in the next Ratchet & Clank game, he will be fully playable in some levels.

There are nine planets to explore, and each one has something unique to offer. The city on the first planet, Corson V, is ruled by mechanical people who live in neon-lit skyscrapers. On the second planet, Sargasso, dangerous animals and poisonous water live in swamps. You can go wherever you want after Sargasso, but the planets are only connected to one Lombax for story reasons. That is, you can't play as Rivet in Corson V or as Ratchet in Sargasso.

I couldn't believe how much work went into making these places. All of them look beautiful and unique, and the number of unlockables you can find is definitely rewarding. These can be golden bolts, which give you access to different game changes; spybots for each blueprint piece of the "ultimate" weapon; or armor pieces.

If you are an explorer like me, you can find dimensional gates on these planets. Most of the time, they give you armor pieces instead of golden bolts or spybots. Unfortunately, each dimensional portal usually leads to a platforming puzzle that feels like it's been done before, but the armors you obtain are well worth the effort. It's easy, and I often look for these portals to unlock those cool-looking armors that give you permanent upgrades whether you wear them or not.

Rift Apart uses all of the PS5's features to their fullest: the 4K resolution with stunning graphics that show off ray-tracing, the Tempest Engine's loud 3D audio, the DualSense's tricks, and, most importantly, its Solid State Drive (SSD) storage.

It's amazing that Insomniac has figured out how to use the PS5's SSD. The fact that the game loads a planet quickly and easily is one of the things that impresses me the most. Another thing that amazes me is how different dimensions are shown in real time. The way the sizes change is a great way to show off the PS5's SSDs.

When you go through a dimensional portal, you are taken to a completely different area that is drawn in real time. There is no loading screen in the middle of the game. I can quickly change dimensions on two planets by hitting the quartz phasefferent area that is drawn in real time. There are no loading screens in between. I can quickly change dimensions on two planets by hitting the quartz phase. Assets load in a split second, so they don't slow down the game as a whole. Some dimensional warps, like when Ratchet falls through different dimensions and planets, are scripted, but the environments that load up on screen show how fast the SSD is.

Today, June 8, the game's Day 1 patch went live. Performance and Performance RT are two new graphics modes that have been added. The overall feel of the game just got weirder. The constant 60 frames per second and dynamic 4K make it feel so smooth, and the quality of the picture barely changes. Also, the bugs and glitches I ran into before have been fixed. This makes Rift Apart another well-optimized and polished game from Insomniac Games.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is another exciting PS5-only game that shows off how powerful the console is. Even though the Rivet gameplay isn't very good, Rift Apart is still a system seller because it has great voice actors, a fun story, and great weapons and combat.
