Life Is Strange True Colors  Game Review

Check out these awesome new games Call of Duty: Vanguard, Battlefield 2042.

Life Is Strange - Before the Storm has always seemed like a well-kept secret. It was always second to the two mainline games that came out before and after it, but it was quietly better than both of them. We can thank Deck Nine Games for that. Now that DONTNOD Entertainment has moved on to other projects, Deck Nine Games is in charge of the next big game in the franchise. The result is Life Is Strange: True Colors, a game that gets rid of the old "episodic" format and feels more like Max and Chloe's old adventures.

It brings the series back to the small-town feel, with friends trying to relax and have fun before a life-changing event makes everyone question what they've always known to be true. Alex Chen is the newest young adult with special powers. After eight years apart, she was invited to live with her brother Gabe. She has just started to feel at home when he dies under strange circumstances.

After these things happen, Alex starts looking into the company Typhon, which pretty much runs the whole town on its little finger. Any more detail would be a spoiler, but what is there feels like it was thrown together quickly. The game comes out as a single product, so you don't have to wait months to find out how things end, but it's over in 10 to 11 hours. That time isn't used well, and, ironically, the title is at its best when it's not telling the main story.

In the first chapter, the story shows what's at stake and has Alex and his friends start their investigation. After that, the story kind of drags on for hours until the end, when a lot of information is dumped all at once. It's not very satisfying, and the plot twists aren't meant to surprise you. There are a lot of obvious plot twists, which make the story not as good as the ones that came before it.

The story is saved by the people in it. Alex, the main character, is one of the most likeable characters we've ever seen in a video game. She's a twentysomething who carries the story on her back with her personality, jokes, and habits. The three of them are fun to talk to, especially Steph, who comes back, and Gabe's brother Ryan. Life Is Strange: True Colors might have the best variety of characters in the series so far, thanks to the larger cast and especially Jed, Ethan, and Eleanor.

Alex's friends and family always have something funny or touching to say, which helps the main character come out of her shell and show her quirky side. Ryan and Steph are both romantic interests in the game, but there's a lot more to the town of Haven than just Ryan and Steph. In particular, Eleanor is an older woman whose story is likely to hit close to home.

Strange Is LifeSo, True Colors is missing that last thing. It has great characters and the same heart and spirit as the first game, but the story is completely different. There's a big difference between the characters and the story of the game. The characters are world-class, but the story isn't.

Now, a new Life is Strange game wouldn't be complete without a new superpower, and Alex has the ability to see and act on people's strongest emotions. Say someone is really sad about Gabe's death. The main character can use her power to interact with things in the environment that give hints about why this person is sad. Once Alex knows what the problem is, she can help them calm down or see sense by giving them other points of view. But the power can go one step further because Alex takes on that weight herself instead of making them do it.

It's by far the most interesting way to use the ability, since you can heal a character's emotions but then risk making Alex's mental state worse by making her deal with those thoughts. The risk-reward system can then change how Alex acts in some of the most important parts of the story or give her more information to help her come up with a better answer to accusations. It's too bad that one of the most interesting powers in the series is tied to a plot that isn't very interesting.

But people who like how Life is Strange games are played won't be disappointed once they can actually move and act like Alex. The third main installment plays just like the other games in the series. You can freely explore environments and interact with objects, which Alex will always comment on. The power based on emotions can only be used on certain people and things, but it's always a good idea to look for those extra chances. Either to get trophies or to check out side stories Side stories get better as you play, so it's always worth going back to NPCs.

Chapter 3 is the best part because, for a few hours, the game forgets about the main story and turns Haven into a full-on LARPing session. We won't tell you how it changes gameplay because you should find out for yourself, but you can be sure that it almost makes the last two chapters worth it. Even though Life is Strange: True Colors sticks to what the series is known for, it is great that it tries to do something different.

The terrible framerate, on the other hand, is something we'd rather not see come back in future parts. On PlayStation 5, every outdoor scene has huge drops in framerate, which can make the game less fun overall. It's always annoying because about half of the game takes place outside, so you'll have to deal with a lot of stuttering and pausing. Once you're inside, the game runs much better, but a small drop in frame rate is still a part of the experience. This one needs one or two patches after it comes out to make it good.

Then there are small visual problems that don't ruin the game but still make you wince a little. Texture pop-in happens quite often, and during one cutscene, Alex was in a T-pose before it was fixed. Again, we expect these bugs to be fixed in updates after the game comes out.

One improvement to the game's technology is that it uses performance capture for the first time in the series, and it really shows. The characters look so much more real, which is a big deal when the game's power comes from feelings that need to be shown through facial expressions. Just look at some footage from other games, and you'll see how much of a makeover this is.

Strange Is Life True Colors had a good chance of being the best game in the series so far, but the story, which is arguably the most important part of a game, let it down. A story that isn't very interesting can only be carried for so long by great character work. Even though Alex's power creates one interesting situation after another, it's not enough to make up for the boring parts of the plot. Even though Life is Strange: True Colors has a lot going for it, it fails because the framerate is so bad.
