Sledgehammer Games has always been the odd third child in the Call of Duty series. Its Modern Warfare and Black Ops games have never been as stable as those from Infinity Ward and Treyarch. Both Advanced Warfare and WWII were bland and easy to forget. These are the Call of Duty games I stopped playing long before they were done. I can tell that Sledgehammer tried to make something different with Call of Duty: Vanguard, but the game feels hollow, half-done, and just like more of the same. Safe play is the best way to describe the game as a whole.

Since 2019, Call of Duty campaigns have tended to be shorter and more story-driven, and Vanguard is no exception. This time, we go back to World War II and learn about a group of elite, multinational special forces sent to stop the Nazi Project Phoenix plan near the end of the war. The story is told in a way that feels like a secret history.

The main plot of Vanguard is very easy to understand. Also, only two missions move the main story forward because Vanguard's story is mostly about the characters. Most of the story is told through the flashbacks of a few key characters.

Arthur Kingsley is the leader of the Vanguard. Polina Petrova is a deadly Russian sniper. Lucas Riggs is an expert on bombs from Australia. Wade Jackson is an American pilot who cracks jokes. Polina Petrova is the strongest person in this group. We learn a lot more about her family, why she does what she does, and her broken heart than we do about our three main characters, who are all more or less the most badass soldiers in their armies. The heroes in Vanguard are based on The Expendables or even something like the Suicide Squad, but the story isn't as smooth as it could be. Polina is the only character who is worth caring about, and no matter what Vanguard did, I never felt like anyone else had as much room to breathe as she did.

Jannick Richter is the main bad guy in Vanguard. He is violent, paranoid, and confused. Our group of bad guys is just as unbalanced as our group of good guys because everyone but Richter is very one-dimensional and almost like a cartoon. They are best described as "super-bad Nazis," and when compared to Richter, who is written better, they are pretty boring to watch.

The campaign in Vanguard does a good job of making beautiful missions with fun visual set pieces. Even though the single-player campaign in Vanguard is only about 5 hours long, it takes you to every front in WWII and west Africa. There's the German attack on Stalingrad, the Battle of Midway, Operation Tonga, and the Battle of El Alamein. All of these look beautiful and serve as a sort of origin story for each operative. The Battle of Midway in particular was quite a show and a nice change of pace, since it is the only mission in the game where you fly an airplane. In the end, the campaign is just as linear as it has always been, and the AI is so stupid that the whole game feels like a shooting gallery, despite some attempts to change things up.

This year, Sledgehammer tried to add something new by giving each soldier on the Vanguard team a unique ability that changes how you play their flashback levels. When you play as Arthur, you tell your teammates to shoot at a tank or stop an MG so that you can move up a level. Polina is very agile, and her missions have her climbing and sneaking around a lot. For most of the campaign, stealth is a good choice. Wade gets a detective mode that helps him find enemy soldiers hiding in trees or grass, and Riggs can hold more explosives and see where they will go when he throws them. Most of these skills aren't that important and are only used in certain situations anyway.

In the end, Vanguard's campaign felt very simple and linear, and the best parts were when Polina or Richter were in the scene because their actors gave great performances in between the big action scenes. If the campaign was even an hour longer, Sledgehammer might be able to fix these plot holes. Still, as it stands, the story feels like it was mostly written as a background for the operators that came with the game and that you can use in multiplayer, and not much else.

This year, zombies are back again. What used to be a little bit of Treyarch flair is now a mainstay of Call of Duty and seems to have a connection to Black Ops: Cold War as part of the Dark Aether timeline. To sum up the story, a Nazi general is working with a powerful demon to create the 1,000-year Reich, so our operatives must work with demons who hate the main demon to win. It's about as good a story as you can get if you want to shoot Nazi zombies. I didn't think this mode would have much of a story to begin with, so whatever I get is just a bonus.

Zombies mode is still the wave-based horde mode that we all love, but this year's version feels a lot more stripped down and is pretty basic. The zombie headshot fest starts in a war-torn and zombie-infested city called Stalingrad. As you go through portals to complete a rotating set of three goals, the city will slowly open up. Each portal will take you to a new area where you must either defend yourself against a wave of enemies, collect runestones to bring to an obelisk, or follow a disembodied head to an objective. Finish the mission, go back to Stalingrad to get better equipment, and then go again. That is all there is to say about it, so let's just leave it at that.

It's fun to shoot Nazi zombies, but it's a bit of a letdown that there's only one map and you have to do the same three goals over and over again. After the game comes out, more is planned for the Zombies mode, but for now, it's a pretty forgettable mode.

This year's multiplayer is pretty much what you'd expect from any Call of Duty, with a few extra bits and pieces. There are the usual game modes, like team deathmatch, dominance, search and destroy, and so on. But this year, Sledgehammer added a cool little switch that lets you choose how fast or slow you want the game to go. You have three options to choose from: Tactical is the classic 6v6 Call of Duty mode, Assault puts you on bigger maps with more players, and Blitz is a blast to play because you kill, die, and kill again very quickly.

My question is: Why hasn't this solution been thought of before? It's awesome. If I want to level up a weapon, I can turn off the Blitz pacing and play kill-box maps and game modes at launch instead of waiting for playlists to be added later. I can always have the kind of Call of Duty experience I want, which is great.

Vanguard came out with 16 maps for the standard game modes and 4 maps for the Champion Hill 2v2/3v3 game mode. Champion Hill is the new Gunfight mode, but instead of four squads, it has eight squads of two or three players.This is a pretty good number of maps at launch, especially since the industry tends to give us a mediocre number of maps and promise to add more content throughout the year that should have been part of the package from the start. Because of some tried-and-true map design choices, these maps are well-balanced, and I enjoy them much more than the camper-fests in Modern Warfare.

The Gunsmith is also back, which is something I liked a lot in the last few Call of Duty games. Even though it is funny to see a WWII gun covered in color vomit and looking like a Frankenstein's monster when all ten attachment slots are full,

Everything in Call of Duty: Vanguard is based on Modern Warfare, and sometimes I feel like I'm just playing Modern Warfare with a different skin. That's not a bad thing, since I really liked what Infinity Ward did with the series and everything still plays great.

In Vanguard, the sounds of guns have a great mechanical punch, killing still feels very real, and movement has been tweaked a bit. The game responds well and is easy to play. Vanguard has great graphics thanks to great lighting and detailed character models. But most of these good things can also be said about the last two books in the series. Call of Duty: Vanguard is fun, and it is also safe and doesn't offend anyone. It's the same as before.

The main thing that sets Vanguard apart from its siblings is how little content it has compared to them. Vanguard's campaign is the shortest and least deep so far. The zombies are basic, and by round 10, you've seen everything they have to offer. Multiplayer is still great, not because of anything Sledgehammer has changed or worked on, but because Sledgehammer hasn't changed anything and instead relies on the fact that Call of Duty is a fun and satisfying shooter to play. In 2019, Infinity Ward set the standard, and Sledgehammer has followed it to the letter. However, in doing so, they have made the most generic and formulaic Call of Duty in this three-game run.

Call of Duty: Vanguard is a great game to get if you want to have fun shooting enemies online with your friends. Just know that this isn't the Call of Duty game that makes any big changes.
