The Callisto Protocol Game Review

Check out these awesome new games Forged In Shadow Torch, Chernobylite.

The Callisto Protocol has been compared to the 2008 survival horror hit Dead Space for a long time. From the camera angle and a lot of the fighting to the atmosphere and setting, everything points to Isaac Clarke and his big stomping boot as the main character. It's understandable that, 14 years later, one of the original creators of the game would want to do something similar, but this is a double-edged sword. When a tribute is paid to a masterpiece, it already has a very solid base to build on. But the Callisto Protocol doesn't have much of its own.

Even though it takes place on the surface of the moon and not in a spaceship, the Black Iron Prison still tries to look and sound like the USG Ishimura. With its dark hallways and nightmare-like people, the main character, Jacob Lee, has a lot of weapons that look the same, and there's still room for a copy of the Kinesis power. You can access the immersive HUD by pressing a button, and your health is still shown on the outside of Jacob's suit. It feels like the first few hours of a sequel, when the gameplay is the same but the developer is just starting to add some new ideas.

It's hard to say whether this is a bad thing or not because it makes the game consistently good. Even some of the enemy designs feel like they were taken from other games, but there's no denying that The Callisto Protocol is a good game just by looking at its blueprints.

So, what's new? Jacob Lee crashes on Jupiter's moon Callisto and is taken prisoner. This is where the story begins. He doesn't stay in his cell for more than five minutes before there are more mutated monsters than security bots, giving him the chance to get away. What happens next is your typical story: the plot is just as much about getting out of Black Iron Prison as it is about finding out what's really going on inside.

It makes sense as a story. It's fine, but not very exciting. You could say the same thing about most of the story's characters, who don't have much in the way of personality or distinguishing traits. Jacob, the main character, is always a bit of a jerk, but Dani is always there to save the day. The two start out as enemies, but they learn that they need to work together to get out of the game. She has a certain charm that makes almost every cutscene she's in better.

It's too bad that neither the story nor any of the other characters can match her skills, because the title has some really great visuals. They must have gotten a lot of the budget because they're very good and make the game look great when you're not controlling the action. What's going on isn't very interesting, but it looks good while it's happening.

That's at least one change from the Dead Space formula, which put all of its cutscenes in the world like God of War, and the combat, which uses both bullets and close-range attacks, is another. As you get close to the mutants of Black Iron Prison at the beginning of the roughly 12-hour campaign, your stun baton will be used a lot more than any gun.

Because of this, you will meet the enemy one-on-one a lot. Jacob has a crowbar and a stun baton, which he can use to block attacks and do damage with. On the other hand, fights are mostly about dodging, which is controlled by the left thumbstick. Timing is very important as you look for signs that an enemy is about to attack and then make space so you can hit them back. The game never really changes beyond mashing the R2 button to get as many hits as possible, but a simple upgrade tree gives you a few new moves to think about as you play.

At first, these melee fights will be hard. In fact, the first few chapters are some of the hardest in the game. But as your arsenal grows, the game gets easier to handle, and some enemies won't even come close to you unless they've been killed by your GRP. This is basically a rechargeable telekinesis skill that lets you pick up enemies and throw them around the arena. For easy kills, the best place to put them is inside moving machinery. When you use melee attacks and regular weapons together, The Callisto Protocol has a nice curve that lets you start to beat monsters in later levels.

All of this adds up to a really solid way to fight that feels good. As you go deeper into the game, you get more options, and since there aren't many puzzles, it's pretty much all survival horror action. It's by far the best part of the experience and a nice way to set it apart from Dead Space.

But the game goes back to its roots in the way it's put together, since it's almost entirely linear. Except for a few optional rooms and areas off to the side, there is only one way to go through Striking Distance Studios. In a time when it's common for RPGs to last 50 hours or more, it's nice to be told where to go and not have to worry about side quests or open-world activities.

Death animations are another thing that the Callisto Protocol plays with. Jacob dies in a lot of horrible ways, like having his eyes poked out and his torso torn in half. Again, these scenes are clearly influenced by Dead Space, but they are at least unique and very violent. Even though you don't want to die and stop making progress, it was fun to see how Jacob died after another failed run.

As we've already said, there's no getting around the fact that the title is pretty good. It's a fun horror campaign on its own, but the story isn't very good. The good combat system makes up for that, though. But it's impossible not to compare it to the series that influenced it so much. Since The Callisto Protocol is not as good as Dead Space, it will always be in the shadow of that game. To make a game that's so similar to another, you'll always have that nagging feeling that you've already done all of this before—14 years ago. Striking Distance Studios will always be remembered as the team that tried to bring back Dead Space instead of making a completely new experience.

Technically, you can switch between a quality mode with 30 frames per second and a performance mode with 60 frames per second. Even though neither option locks the frame rate (small drops are common, especially during intense fights), the second one is the one to choose. With the extra frames, fights feel a lot more fluid and interesting, and even though you lose a lot of graphical quality, the game still looks great.

It's not all smooth sailing, though. During our review, we saw frame rate drops that were so bad (less than 10 fps) that we could crash the game on demand. The problem was fixed by reinstalling the game and loading a save from earlier. Several updates were pulled while we were playing, and a patch for day one is also expected. But that doesn't mean the same thing won't happen to you.

The Callisto Protocol is always a good game that, at its best, can compete with some of the best survival horror games. But there's no getting around the fact that the game doesn't have much that makes it stand out. By taking so much from Dead Space, it always feels like you've been there and done that. The Callisto Protocol is good, even though it has problems with the frame rate and has a boring story with bad characters. It's not great, though.
