Dolmen Game Review

Check out these awesome new games Trek to Yomi, Destroy All Humans 2.

In science fiction, there is an unspoken rule that all distress signals in the middle of nowhere are never just a normal mission. But in the case of Dolmen, everything is the same. From the moment you teleport "to the wrong place" on the planet to the moment you knock the big bad off his high perch, everything is just routine. And it's too bad because Dolmen tries to give us a reason to fight bosses again, which is something we don't often see in games like Souls.

Dolmen is a sci-fi and horror game with combat like Soul. In the game's story, you play a character with no name who is only called "the Commander." You respond to a call for help about a collapse between dimensions on a planet where an alien race is doing experiments. When something goes wrong, we have to clean up the mess.

Dolmen is like a mix of Dark Souls' close-quarters combat and Dead Space's over-the-shoulder shooting. When you think about it, it sounds cool. But in real life, it never works out the way you would think it would. That doesn't mean that the game doesn't have any interesting parts. Just that those moments are lost in the monotony of getting from A to B in the most boring ways.

The main thing I don't like about the game is that most of the areas are boring and don't stand out. This is made worse by the fact that every time you interact with a console, you don't really know which door you've opened, even if the camera sometimes pans over to show you that you've opened door A.

Where is it on the map? Oh, you don't have a map? How about some hidden clues that tell the player that this locked door is more important than the others? None? Cool. Guess I'll go run laps till I inadvertently stumble upon it.

Even the melee fighting in the game is clumsy in this way. The animations are stiff, and most of the time, attacks that look like they should hit don't. Combat only gets better when you mix things up with ranged attacks and reactor attacks.

When you add something that uses up battery power, the game becomes fun all of a sudden. It's easier to shoot than to hit someone with a regular melee attack. In fact, going from a shooting position to third-person view is quick and responsive. Using the reactor, which also uses up battery power, makes attacks with an energy blast last longer and makes enemies less resistant to elements. I'm not sure why you'd bother with regular melee combat when the other option is better and can be used again as quickly as a stamina meter.

And that's how you should think of the battery meter, too. It's just another way to track your stamina, and it only goes down when you use battery power to heal or, in the case of some weapons, use alternate attacks that use up all your energy. You can charge your battery by eating cells, which is similar to how Estus Flasks are used in Dark Souls. But the catch is that it takes a long time to charge the battery.

And that was yet another thing that drove me crazy. It may take a very long time to complete certain tasks.

I've already talked about charging batteries. That makes sense, because something that lets you do so much must take a long time to charge if you depend on it. But why does the animation for something like a jump attack take two and a half years to finish? And half the time, it doesn't even stun the enemies you hit. In the time it takes you to land a jump attack, the enemy has already taken a chunk of your health, taken the hit like a champ, and dealt damage back before you can reset and recover from the attack. Excuse me? As far as power attacks go, that doesn't do much.

Dolmen has about 4–5 different biomes, and all of them look pretty good on PS5 graphics. But almost all of them lead back to the same old labs where scientists are doing experiments they shouldn't be doing. That's fine and all, but would it be too much to ask for a few more details, like creepily undulating organic growth or sand covering dead bodies or something? At least give the player something for going around the map. I guess you could get away with a boring setting and story if the gameplay was interesting, but from what I've said so far, combat is very hit or miss.

The most fun I've had in the game was when I went from place to place, taking materials from as many enemies as I could and using the Nanites (souls) I'd collected to make the best armor I could with the best materials I had on hand.

The longer I played Dolmen, the more I got used to the weird ways people interact with each other. I'm talking about enemies that run past you like they're after a ghost. Strange encounters with a sandworm that, if you look at them closely, will send you flying through the air and into goddamn Narnia. Even talking to the few people who had managed to stay alive looked and felt like something from the PS2 era.

I would say that it has a certain charm... But there's no getting around the fact that a lot of this game is janky as hell.

The fights with the bosses were fun, though. Like a real Dark Souls fight, with attacks that follow a pattern and sometimes a second stage. It won't be enough to make up for the other 2/3 of the game. Also, if you get these things called "Dolmen Fragments" (Souls 2.0), you can fight the boss again to try to get materials to make unique weapons. I guess that makes the boss fights more important in this way. Okay, I'll make an exception for the final boss. That guy didn't give anyone any room to breathe unless you could stun him. And was the most difficult to handle. Let's just say that winning the fight took more luck than skill.

Overall, Dolmen is a hastily put together mess of a game with good intentions. It looks like a pretend sports car. No matter how nice it looks on the outside, if it has a 2-cylinder engine under the hood, people will look at it strangely. But in the end, it will depend on how much you make per mile. Even though I don't like the presentation, which is all style and no substance, I have to say that some of the features are fun. It might look nice from a distance. But the fact that it puts style over substance is what makes this otherwise good soul-like shooter boring.
