Need for Speed Unbound Game Review

It's great to have a good arcade racing game back on the PlayStation. They don't come up very often anymore, since most car fans prefer more realistic driving experiences. Even though this is the case, Need for Speed still comes out every few years to give us some high-speed thrills and beautiful power slides. The series has had its ups and downs for a long time, but we're happy to say that Need for Speed Unbound, the latest game, is a winner.
From the moment you start playing, the game has a distinct personality.Unbound has a very unique style, thanks to its mix of hip-hop and electronic music and its cartoonish, graffiti-like visual touches. It won't be to everyone's taste, but we love the way it's put together. It gives a series that has been struggling to find its voice again a lot of personality and style.
We will say that the visual effects don't really fit with the realistic open world and vehicles, but without them, the game would be a little boring. Without all the sketchy doodles and colorful tyre smoke, it wouldn't feel as good to hit the boost, do a long drift, or get a lot of air off a big ramp. It feels great to have more feedback. The trick doesn't work as well with human characters, and some NPCs look good while others don't. Still, you won't see many of them unless they're part of a story cutscene.
Speaking of stories, the story here doesn't do much more than fill in the blanks. In the prologue, you play as an up-and-coming street racer. At the end, your "friend" drops you off without a ride. A few years later, you find out about underground racing again and find out that your old friend is tearing up the asphalt in the car she stole from you. To get back at them, you'll have to win everything at The Grand, the biggest street racing event in the city. The writing is a little over-the-top, but the story is really just an excuse to fix up a cool car and drive it around.
And that's where the game really shines, as it should. The controls in Need for Speed: Unbound are the best they have been in a long time. It expands on what Heat brought to the table, but there is a distinct difference.Most cars feel more responsive, and it's much easier to keep a drift going. Running at a smooth 60 frames per second also helps a lot, making the whole experience better.
It's important to note that the handling varies by vehicle, but it's also highly customizable.By default, tapping the gas or brakes will start a drift, but you can turn those features off completely if you want. You can also change how all cars handle so that drifting or grip is more important. Most of the time, the second one is better for getting faster lap times in races, while the first one is used in style-focused events like drift events and Takeover challenges. We enjoy the ability to pull off enormous power slides, and although though drifts will slow you down, they are worth the effort since they feel so fantastic when you master them. The point is that Unbound has something for everyone who likes arcade racing, and we think it does so in a great way.
The single-player mode will test you no matter what you drive or how you drive it. The prologue gives you a pretty good car for the first hour or so, but after that, you have much less exciting options. Because of how things are set up, you'll also have a hard time getting ahead for a while, which can give the impression that the game is very hard. It can be harder than you think, but once your cars have better parts, it's easy to move up the ranks.
Like its predecessor, Unbound separates day and night, but it does so in a different way. Each period has a set of races or competitions you can enter to win some much-needed cash. But every event will give you heat, which shows how quickly the police will chase you down if they see you. Also, the heat you get during the day stays with you into the night, making it dangerous to drive at night.
The campaign gives you a lot to think about because of the way it was designed. After a day and night, your heat level will reset, and you'll move on to the next day on the calendar. You have to spend five game days getting ready for the big qualifier event on Saturday. To enter, you need a car in a certain tier and a lot of cash. Oh, and most of the regular events that happen every week also cost money to participate in. Because of this, you can't always spend all your money upgrading or customizing your car.
You need money to improve your car and enter each qualifier, but to get money, you have to race during the week, which will get you in trouble with the police. The more money you try to make each day, the harder it will be to stay away from the police and get the money. If you can get past the cliche, it's a real risk-versus-reward system that makes you think about all your choices. It's cleverly put together.
Online, on the other hand, doesn't feel as exciting. Since there are no police officers on the roads, you can play as many races as you want with up to 15 other people. This means that there needs to be a separate garage for the offline mode, where it is much easier to make money. But besides the different playlists, there's not much else to do. The online mode shows how empty the sandbox city of Lakeshore is, which is a big problem. There are billboards to break, collectibles to find, and little challenges like speed traps all over the place, but they don't really matter. It can also be frustrating to not be able to move quickly, especially online when you just want to get to an event. Without the racing, the open world would be a pretty boring place to be.
Even though it has a couple of minor problems, Need for Speed Unbound is a great arcade racing game that finally gets the series back on track. The different ways to control the car feel great, and the single-player mode has a very interesting campaign that pits you against both the police and other racers. The much-talked-about cartoon effects do add some flair to the experience, and everything runs beautifully at 4K and 60 frames per second. If you don't mind a background that isn't too exciting and an online mode that doesn't have much to offer, this is a great game to try out.
