Just when you think the "found footage" sub-genre has done everything it can, independent filmmakers come up with new ways to use it. The story of "Mean Spirited" is about a YouTuber whose channel is all about pranks and his rude personality.
Andy (Will Madden) has fans, but not as many as he would like. His childhood friend and former partner, Bryce (Jeff Ryan), and he had a fight. Bryce would go on to have a successful film career by playing the lead role in a superhero movie that was similar to Marvel.
Andy and his crew decide to make up while filming the whole bloody thing in order to get more views. The important words here are "hatchet" and "bloody."
Mean Spirited has a simple plot and it's not difficult to figure out where the mysteries are leading.Many of the clues are very clear, and there is a lot of foreshadowing of what will happen next.
Mean Spirited is elevated by its stellar cast and their performances.For a comedy about a cult of demons and a rude YouTube star, every character feels surprisingly real. It helps that the actors have good material to work with and can say their lines naturally.
Will Madden's performance as Andy is especially electric. He really looks and acts like a real YouTuber who is too old for his audience and won't let go. The parts where he acts like someone else are especially convincing, and the annoying editing fits the style of a prankster content creator very well.
Andy is a very torn person. There is a part of him that wants to be very successful no matter what, but he is very jealous of Bryce's success. He has problems, but he still has some heart.
The same can't be said about Bryce. He seems very strange, cold, and purposely fake. The actor who plays him is also the writer and director of the movie, which is pretty impressive when you think about all the jobs that go into making a movie. He looks like he could have been in a big-budget superhero movie because he has strange features.
It wouldn't be surprising if most of the actors' lines were made up on the spot. There are no corny lines, and people sometimes talk over each other in a way that makes sense.
One of the best character-driven scenes is when Andy, who is nervous and moves around a lot, sits outside with Bryce and they argue back and forth. The scene is tense and works because the characters have been thought out.
Mean Spirited occasionally feels more like a strange mumble-core film than a typical horror-comedy.Most of the scenes in the movie are people talking to each other, and the drama comes from this. For a horror comedy, there aren't that many scary or tense moments.
Even for a movie with found footage, there isn't much in the way of production design. Most of the time, when making these kinds of movies, the directors use real places. Mean Spirited is mostly comprised of one large house and what appears to be an old hotel.
The hotel is almost never used. Most of the story takes place in Bryce's mansion, and what viewers see is the raw, unedited footage that would normally be cut out of a YouTube video. Realistically, it makes sense, but it doesn't look like much.
Mean Spirited has some issues with its movement in the second act.The middle of the story takes a long time to get through. The movie is 94 minutes long, but it feels longer than that. If Mean Spirited was cut down to 85 to 90 minutes, it might be able to overcome its slow second act.
Found-footage movies use immersion to draw the audience in. Most of the time, Mean Spirited does a good job of making the movie feel more real by having the actors handle the camera and keep it close to the ground.
It falls down when there is background music that wouldn't exist in the world of the characters. It seems like a mistake to put music or sounds from outside the story into a movie.
When it did happen, it was annoying and took the viewer out of the moment. This may have been done to "punch up" a scene that didn't have enough mood.
Mean Spirited needed to scare people even more. The base is already very strong, and the characters are well-developed and easy to like. Instead of long scenes of characters talking, there could have been tense situations that gave the characters more depth.
The scary scenes could have been broken up with a joke or a funny reference to an earlier scene that showed something about the characters. The people who made Mean Spirited probably didn't have enough money to make bigger scary scenes, but the strength of the characters makes the movie interesting.
